COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIP
When I began my leadership career, I was very ineffective as a leader. I believed I had talent. But when I got out into the real world, I fell far short of my expectations. How did I turn things around? By making small decisions that were difficult. With each one, I gained more confidence and more courage, and I began to change. The process took me four years. At the end of that time, I had learned many valuable lessons, and I wrote the following to help me cement what I had learned:
Courageous Leadership Simply Means I’ve Developed:
1. Convictions that are stronger than my fears
. 2. Vision that is clearer than my doubts.
3. Spiritual sensitivity that is louder than popular opinion.
4. Self-esteem that is deeper than self-protection.
5. Appreciation for discipline that is greater than my desire for leisure.
6. Dissatisfaction that is more forceful than the status quo.
7. Poise that is more unshakeable than panic.
8. Risk taking that is stronger than safety seeking.
9. Right actions that are more robust than rationalization.
10. A desire to see potential reached more than to see people appeased.
You don’t have to be great to become a person of courage. You just need to want to reach your potential and to be willing to trade what seems good in the moment for what’s best for your potential. That’s something you can do regardless of your level of natural talent.
—Talent Is Never Enough
MAKE A SMALL DECISION TODAY THAT WILL INCREASE YOUR CONFIDENCE AND LEADERSHIP COURAGE.

Daily Scripture

1 Peter 5:2-4 –
Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve;not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.

Daily Quote

“The most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born — that there is a genetic factor to leadership. This myth asserts that people simply either have certain charismatic qualities or not. That’s nonsense; in fact, the opposite is true. Leaders are made rather than born.”

PREPARATION FOR TOMORROW BEGINS TODAY

Recently, a few friends and I were privileged to have dinner with former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani and his wife, Judith, in Orlando after a speaking engagement. I found the mayor to be a very warm and personable man who was an easy conversationalist. During our conversation, I of course asked him about his experience during 9/11. He talked about his impressions from that day and how the event impacted him as a leader. He said that leaders need to be ready for anything. They need to study, acquire skills, and plan for every kind of situation.
“Your success will be determined by your ability to prepare,” he said. He went on to explain that when a situation like that on September 11 occurs—for which there was no plan in place—leaders must take action and rely on whatever preparation had taken place. In his case, it was the emergency drills they had followed. Both helped during the crisis.
Preparation doesn’t begin with what you do. It begins with what you believe. If you believe that your success tomorrow depends on what you do today, then you will treat today differently. What you receive tomorrow depends on what you believe today. If you are preparing today, chances are, you will not be repairing tomorrow.
Talent Is Never Enough
FOCUS ON PREPARING TODAY SO THAT YOU CAN EXPERIENCE SUCCESS TOMORROW

Today’s Scripture

1 Peter 5:8

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your Christian brothers and sisters all over the world are going through the same kind of suffering

Daily Quote

Preparation eradicates cowardice, which we define as the failure to act in the midst of fear.

CREATE A GROWTH ENVIRONMENT
Just as the growth of tropical fish is limited by the size of the aquarium in which they live, you are affected by your environment. That’s why it’s crucial to create an environment of growth around you. That kind of place should look like this:
Others are ahead of you: When you surround yourself with people from whom you can learn, you are more likely to grow.
You are still challenged: Complacency kills growth.
Your focus is forward: If you’re thinking more about the past than the future, your growth has probably stopped.
The atmosphere is affirming: Industrialist Charles Schwab said, “I have yet to find the man . . . who did not do better work and put forth greater effort under a spirit of approval than under a spirit of criticism.”
You are out of your comfort zone: Growth requires risk. Ronald E. Osborne stated, “Unless you do something beyond what you’ve already mastered, you will never grow.”
Others are growing: When it comes to growth, it’s better to swim in a school than to try to do everything on your own.
There is a willingness to change: Clayton G. Orcutt declared, “Change itself is not progress, but change is the price that we pay for progress.”
Growth is modeled and expected: In the best possible environment, growth is not only allowed, but leaders model it and expect it from everyone. And when that happens, everyone’s potential is off the charts.
—Your Road Map for Success
TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT OF GROWTH FOR YOUR TEAM MEMBERS.

Daily Scripture

Philippians 2:1-30

So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,

BE WILLING TO DO WHAT OTHERS WON’T
It’s said that an aid group in South Africa once wrote to missionary and explorer David Livingstone, “Have you found a good road to where you are? If so, we want to know how to send other men to join you.”
Livingstone replied, “If you have men who will come only if they know there is a good road, I don’t want them. I want men who will come even if there is no road at all.” That’s what top leaders want from the people working for them: they want individuals who are willing to do what others won’t.
Few things gain the appreciation of a top leader more quickly than an employee with a whatever-it-takes attitude. They must be willing and able to think outside of their job description, to be willing to tackle the kinds of jobs that others are too proud or too frightened to take on.
Few things are more frustrating for a leader than having someone refuse to do a task because it is “not his job.” (In moments like those, most of the top leaders I know are tempted to invite such people to be without a job altogether!) Good leaders don’t think in those terms. They understand the Law of the Big Picture from The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership: “The goal is more important than the role.” A 360-Degree Leader’s goal is to get the job done, to fulfill the vision of the organization and its leader. That often means doing whatever it takes. As a leader “moves up,” that more often takes the form of hiring someone to get it done, but leaders in the middle often don’t have that option. So instead, they jump in and get it done themselves.
—The 360° Leader CULTIVATE A WHATEVER-IT-TAKES ATTITUDE.

Daily Scripture

Philippians 3:14,
“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Today’s Quote
Soldiers, when committed to a task, can’t compromise. It’s unrelenting devotion to the standards of duty and courage, absolute loyalty to others, not letting the task go until it’s been done.

BOTTLE ROCKET BEATDOWN

– Where: Hill City, Chattanooga, TN

Today 16 PAX marched onto the fields of Hill City with the red glare of rockets lighting up the Chattanooga sky. Today was no normal day, it was a special one. Today we honored our country’s heroes and celebrated our freedom to be able to do what we do in the greatest country on Earth. We had record numbers and we are so proud to see our band of brothers in Chattanooga growing!
There was no one single Q today. On this special day, 4 brothers passed the Q torch around to complete what I think we can all agree ended up being the most memorable Post in F3 Chatt’s short history.
CONDITIONS: 75 Degrees F, Pouring Rain, and 300% Humidity
WARMUP: Loosened up the muscles with some light OYO stretching and then Angus led us down a path of warmup torture…here’s what he put us through:

“Americans should never forget that the founders of this country, like all who have served her in uniform, were willing to die defending everything its flag represent. It’s so easy to get lost in the controversies that divide us. But I believe, no matter what our race, religion, or beliefs may be, that AMERICANS should be able to come together to keep our country rooted in what made it great”

Letter to the Pax on Expansion Spring 2017

Spring 2017 Expansion: Our Biggest Leap Yet!
Gentlemen,
If you have heard OBT and Dredd speak, they stress that the only way F3 continues to be successful is by each man giving it away. To that end I wanted to take a minute and update everyone on our Spring ’17 LEAP efforts.
This was our most ambitious and successful set of LEAP’s to date!
Some key numbers:
8: Cities launched (Pittsburgh, Toledo, Columbus, Cincinnati, Louisville, Indianapolis, Birmingham, Minneapolis).
Over 600: New FNGs who have experienced F3 this spring at those locations.
53: Pax who traveled Downrange to #GiveItAway.
10: Current F3 states that sent pax DR to help with the LEAP (FL, GA, SC, NC, VA, OH, TN, MS, IN, PA).
$29,462: F3 funds spent to reimburse travel costs and provide LEAP stipends.
This was a major undertaking for a load of volunteers.
First and most important is to acknowledge the leadership of Starfish (Drew Dixon; Winston-Salem/Charlotte). He Qed the Spring 2017 LEAP, taking on our most ambitious set of launches ever while also juggling being a husband, father, and serving as CFO in a position that requires him to commute and spend many nights away from his family. A Winston-Salem Redwood Original, Starfish has helped lead the success and growth of F3 across the Piedmont Triad region.
Starfish talks a lot of smack and is always smiling, which helps hide just how huge an undertaking this effort was for him. First the research and conversations, phone calls and social media monitoring that go into deciding which cities to launch. Then, recruiting and training pax from all over F3 Nation to serve as City Launch Qs – with the massive scale of this spring’s effort, that involved training more FNGs to the LEAP than ever before, including hours of phone calls and emails.
Here’s who stepped up to lead those launches, all of which have been successful beyond our wildest hopes. If you’re proud of F3’s increasing national profile, please give the thanks to these men and Starfish:
Beverly; Winston-Salem (Minneapolis)
Schotty; Cleveland (Toledo)
Titan; CLT Metro (Columbus)
Grapevine; CLT Metro (Louisville)
Senator Tressel; Fort Mill (Cincinnati)
Long Time; Greensboro (Pittsburgh)
Fonzie; NE Indiana (Indianapolis)
Juggernaut; Greenwood (Birmingham)

Those men then got to go and recruit men to go DR, find AO’s, manage budgets, worry about the weather.
That’s when the real exciting part happens. Budgeting, flights, hotels, flight cancellations, weather (Noah called to say we had a lot of rain in the Ohio Valley in Spring ‘17) and hoping that pax will actually show up on Launch Day. The Friday night before a launch is stressful for these LEAP teams. After devoting hours of planning and travel away from families, you just have to pray that a few men will come out and give something completely different like F3 a try! We hold our collective breath on Saturday morning, waiting to get a report on counts via Twitter. Success all around!!!
Finally, huge thanks to all the men who took time away from work and families to travel to our LEAP cities and share their passion for F3! Over 50 men went DR for us – by far the most ever in a LEAP season. We count on them to return to their home AOs with a new passion for #GivingItAway and to help recruit other F3 men to help with future Leaps!
We continue to get daily inquiries from men all over the country who want us to bring F3 to their city. This week alone, we’ve heard from Lubbock, TX; Daphane, AL; Chicago; Groton, CT; Michigan; Colorado; and California. We are in high demand, but we remain an all-volunteer organization when it comes to Expansion. If you have flexibility in your life and a passion for spreading F3 to new lands, please let us know. If you have less flexibility, but other skills, we need to know that as well – we don’t just need guys to lead workouts, but also tech guys, finance guys, sales guys, etc.
I mentioned the almost $30,000 that we spent on this effort. If the unspoken 4th F in F3 is “free,” where does that come from? First is revenue generated by the royalty you pay for official F3 logo gear from MudGear. When you buy a race jersey, workout sarong, hat, etc., from MudGear, some percentage of that sale flows to F3. That’s why we can be such hard-a$$es when we find out people are producing non-official F3 logo gear or going around MudGear to sell F3 stuff to the pax. So please don’t do it, and to the extent you are able please support the effort by buying your gear through the F3 store.
The second way we raise money for LEAPs is via fundraising efforts by individual regions. For the last three years, Area 51 in South Charlotte has donated profits from their annual golf tournament to the LEAP – money generated by that event has funded over 9 LEAPs! If your region is planning an event that will generate proceeds for a good cause, please consider F3 Expansion!
Lastly if you are thinking about where you personally want to put your philanthropic dollars to work, we are very interested in being that landing spot. We have never formally passed the hat for Expansion, but the demand for F3 is crazy! I wish I could say yes to everyone who inquiries about F3 coming to their town. We spent a lot of our saved revenue from the last three years on the effort this spring and the demand for Fall ’17 is not letting up. The F3 Foundation can take tax-deductible donations and send them to F3 Expansion if you ask them to earmark that money.  You can make a donation thru the link on the F3Naiton website but please tag #LEAP.
Thanks again to all the men who really sacrificed time, energy and passion to taking F3 out to men who need us. Now it is time to give it away to more men!
We are going to continue to be aggressive in the Fall of ’17. Now that we’re on the doorstep, we’re going to make a big push into Chicago this fall, launching four locations at once beginning at the end of September. We’re also going to St. Louis and we’ll connect the dots between Dallas, Houston and San Antonio in Texas with a plant in the state capital of Austin.
Follow @F3Expansion on Twitter and F3 Expansion on Facebook.
If we can keep the momentum going, this F3 thing might just work….! : )
Best Regards,
Crotch Rocket. @Cotchett1

06/20/2017 Backblast

– Where: Hill City, Chattanooga, TN
– When: 06/20/2017, 0530
– QIC: Delta
– The PAX: Prosciutto, Laces Out (RESPECT) and his FNG who we dubbed Sling, Rainman, Stairmaster, Mr. Clean, Ohms & Angus
The Scene:
-High 60’s and a light sprinkle…the big stuff held off until we were getting into our cars to head home after a beat down.
-The PAX came out strong rocking the no-sleeves (Prosciutto even rocked a camo Dale Jr. no sleeves shirt—all that was missing was a mullet) in honor of Cheech from F3 Lexington who was hit by a car while running with his PAX the day before. Praying that God will work a miracle for him and his family…we are praying for you sir and the whole F3 Lexington community. #BandOfBrothers
Welcome and Disclaimer were dropped like a hot mic…
Pax took a li’l mosey to the parking lot near Coolidge Park for the warm-up:
Warm Up:
Side Straddle Hop / IC x 15
Mountain Climbers / IC x 15
High Knees / IC x 15
Wide High Knees / IC x 15
Side Straddle Hop / IC x 15
Baby Arm Circles (Forward & Backwards) / IC x 15
Moroccan Night Clubs (AKA, how white dudes dance in the club) / IC x 15
Squat Chinooks / IC x 15
Side Straddle Hop / IC x 15
We then set our legs on fire by lunging to almost the end of the parking lot and back…
We then took a li’l mosey back to the Love Shack
The Main Thang:
We were feeling a little inspired today, so we grabbed a deck of cards and assigned an exercise to each suit (Diamonds = Burpees, Hearts = Merkins, Spades = Squats, Clubs = Big Boy Sit Ups)…We then proceeded to flip the cards over one by one (each man taking a turn flipping over a card, calling out the exercise and leading the exercise)…If the card that was flipped was a 9 of Diamonds, that meant, we all had to complete 9 Burpees…if it was a 4 of Clubs, we all did 4 Big Boy Sit Ups…The Jack, Queen, King and Ace of each suit had us doing 11 of that exercise. There were 2 Jokers in the deck and when they got flipped over, we got a little reprieve in a 10 count. We repeated taking turns flipping cards over and executing the exercises until there were no more cards…
Thanks to Rainman and his math skills, we found out that when it was all said and done, we had done 98 reps of each exercise and when you multiply that by the 4 exercises we did, you get 392 total reps.
Other than the 2-10 counts, thanks to the Jokers, the only other break we got was due to the rule I enforced at the beginning which said: whenever a group of joggers ran by, the PAX will execute low plank for a IC 15 count.
6MOM:
Due to our trip to Vegas, where we pulled out the deck of cards, we were only left with time to do 1 exercise to set our abs on fire…So I handed the reigns to Ohms and he led us through some LBC’s (IC x 20)
Countorama
Namorama
We bestowed the name Sling to our FNG (Laces Out—RESPECT—gets the award for bringing FNG’s like its his job)…Sling came about become after pursing a girl for several months, she finally agreed to go on a date with him…On said date, he slammed her arm in the car door; breaking her arm! She then rocked a cast and a sling…
Word of the day: Active Participant // everything we are involved goes so much better when we actively engage and participate…Like my mom always said: You are either part of the problem or part of the solution.
Prayer:
Lexington: Cheech & Tap
Laces Out: Cousin battling cancer / niece–surgery
Angus” Wife’s pregnancy
Gus: Transition in Memphis
Snowflake: Summer camp & broken arm
