WOD: “Keep Ithaka always in your mind. Arriving there is what you’re destined for. But don’t hurry the journey at all. Better if it lasts for years, so you’re old by the time you reach the island, wealthy with all you’ve gained on the way, not expecting Ithaka to make you rich”

This is poem is about the Odyssey and Odysseus journey home. Sometimes your journey home will have some detours and could last a long time. This poem reminds you to enjoy the journey and make the most of it but to also never forget your end goal. I spent a 1.5 year in NC waiting to come back to Chattanooga and I enjoyed my time there especially getting to run and ruck with the men of F3 Hickory.

WOD: There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance – Ecclesiastes 3:1-4
This weekend I went to my parents in AL and had a lot stuff planned with my family and to catch up with old friends but as soon as I got to my parents home I found out we were attending a funeral on Saturday that changed all my plans. At the funeral it was nice being with loved ones and taking the time to show our respect. It gave me time to put things in prospective and to enjoy the moment. We tend to live life from one event to the next rarely taking time to reflect on what we just accomplished. Just know that there is a season for everything and that its ok to take time for yourself and family.

WOD: YHC shared an excerpt from the book he is currently reading titled The Opposite of Loneliness by Marina Keegan. Here is that excerpt: “We don’t have a word for the opposite of loneliness, but if we did, I could say that’s what I want in life. What I’m grateful and thankful to have found at Yale, and what I’m scared of losing when we wake up tomorrow and leave this place. It’s not quite love and it’s not quite community; it’s just this feeling that there are people, an abundance of people, who are in this together. Who are on your team. When the check is paid and you stay at the table. When it’s four a.m. and no one goes to bed. That night with the guitar. That night we can’t remember. That time we did, we went, we saw, we laughed, we felt. The hats.”
I choose this as my WOD to encourage the HIM to take advantage of the 2nd F opportunities that we offer. We are more than a work out group. We are a family. We have seen each other grow for the last year, months, or even weeks and we are invested in each other. We all have other obligations but make time to grab breakfast with your brothers or even a drink after work or a glass of milk after a beatdown. If your schedule allows it participate in a CSUP (Completely Stupid and Utterly Pointless) you will make some great memories. Just ask Vila, Ohms, Whittler, and Angus that did a polar plunge last winter or Picasso that ran from Chattanooga to Nashville. The point I am getting at is that you should never feel alone when you are a part of a great group like F3 Chatt.
Moleskin:
I have been gone most of March and it felt great getting to Q this AM. I have been looking forward to this morning the minute Ohms asked who was available to Q and appreciate everyone that came out and worked hard. I have enjoyed meeting some of the newer guys and hope to get to meet the rest of you men the following weeks. I am also proud of all the EH’ing that has been going, it feels great coming back and seeing new guys in the gloom. I hope you enjoyed the small English listen on literary devices, and if you can tell this moleskin contains  another one. [Anaphora a rhetoric device in which a word or group of words are repeated at the beginning of a sentence or clause]. Well I’ve never really enjoyed proof reading my own papers so have fun tearing this BB apart. Just be gentle and not as brutal as I have been these last few days.

WOD: Dream Big For We Have A Big God. I ran a 15k this past weekend. I knew I could finish but was not expecting to do it with an 11 minute pace. I just want to thank all the men of F3 Chatt for pushing me everyday I’m in town. All through college we are taught about SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, & Timely). I never really liked this because it ask to set an attainable goal. Why set a goal you know you can reach. I feel people do this because we are afraid of taking risk and even more of failure. Growing up I was told to set goals that the only way you can accomplish them is with the help of God. Sure you might fail but that is a part of life and how you handle failure will determine the type of person you become. Dan Gable, one of my favorite wrestlers, was undefeated his HS career and up to his senior year in college where he would lose his last match as a senior in the NCAA finals, but although he lost his senior year he went on to win an Olympic Gold medal the following year. So I leave you with a quote from the great Dan Gable “I’m the type of person who sets high goals and work hard to attain those goals, but I am only human.”

WOD: Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human master. – Colossians 3:23
I picked this as a verse because I am currently reading The Civilized Engineer by Samuel C. Florman and he talks about how many students are enrolling to be engineers for the money. Florman states “I take little satisfaction in knowing that engineering enrollment has doubled when I learned that young people are entering the profession mainly because it promises steady employment.” During college I had a handful of friends that started off as engineering and after a semester or 2 they would end up changing majors to business. The reason for this is because they were not passionate about engineering, they did not enjoy the learning and challenges that come with engineering. Many people fail in new year resolutions or working out because they are not passionate about what they are doing. In F3 we EH a lot of men and when we do get FNGs they either hate it or fall in love with it and keep coming out. We come out not because we enjoy freezing temperatures but because we love what F3 stands for.

WOD: “Success is just being happy… God has helped me to love myself. I know who God is, and I love God.” – Herschel Walker
We are a week into the new year. Everyone has set their New Years Resolution and goals. Now take the time to define what success means to you. Success is not just being on top of the mountain or having the most money. It could be completing a marathon, a GoRuck Tough event, coming out to the Gloom. Sometimes success is in the journey and not the end result. Herschel defined success as being happy which is a great definition and he got their through loving God. If you know and love God then you have already won.
New year, new goals, you gotta define success It’s not just being on top
Here is the link to the Herschel Walker article. Some highlights:

  • Dips — up to a 1,000 a day
  • Squats — up to a 1,000 a day
  • Lunges — up to a 1,000 a day
