A bit of a different warm up as QIC decided to make this a moving warm up.
Mosey for 1 minute and 15 seconds followed by:
SSH x 20
3rd grade exercises x 15
Merkin x 10
Body builders x 5 OYO
Repeat 4 more times, alternating the stretching exercise, at which time we reached our destination
We then did an Infinity Plank with high plank, low plank, Side Planks, Plank Jacks, and mountain climbers

The Thang

The Beast is clearly a glove-free zone so we worked on building those calluses on the asphalt
No Glove, No Love
Beginning on one curb, each PAX performed Inchworm Merkins to the other curb, performed 25 American Hammers, then lunged back to do 25 Flutter kicks
Round 2 – Bear crawl down, 25 AH, lunge back for 25 FK
Round 3 – Inchworm merkin, 25 AH, lunge back, 25 FK
Round 4 – Merkin roll down, 25 AH, lunge back, 25 FK
We then began our mosey back, stopping midway to do Good Mornings and Heel stretches
Once back at the parking lot, we had enough time for some Mary
LBC x 20
Heel touches x 15
Reverse Pickle Pounder x 10
Freddy Mercury x 15
Hello Dolly x 15
Pretzel Crunch x 20
Over and out.

COT

We all had places to be this morning so the COT was short.  After the “O-ramas”, my WOD was to encourage everyone to run their own race.  We often focus on pleasing others or doing what seems right to others and we forget to stay true to ourselves.  Don’t worry about what other people think.  Work to earn the acceptance of your Creator, your family, and yourself.  We can do this by running our own race instead of someone else’s race.
We proceeded to acknowledge those in need of prayer including Ohms’ FIL, EB’s return to work, Whittler’s smooth sale of his house in Germantown, and all the unspoken requests.

Moleskin

Lots of commentary regarding the lack of gloves among the HIM involved today.  Gloves have become the Scarlet Letter of Beast Ridge.  That being said, I had to take several breaks typing this up because my hands hurt.  And there may be glass in them.

Proactive vs. Reactive
Proactive – people that work on things they can do something about.  Their energy is positive and they focus on increasing their circle of influence i.e.  those things they can control.
Reactive – people that focus on the weakness of other people, problems in the environment, and circumstances which they have no control over.  This results in blaming and accusatory attitudes and feelings of victimization.
Be proactive, not reactive.
Lord, please give me the courage to change what can and ought to be changed, the serenity to accept things that can’t be changed, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Moleskin
I found it very interesting that this week on the F3 nation channel, they described a “Cousin Eddie” as a PAX who posts in another region and shows up without notice.  We ironically had a Cousin Eddie today whose F3 name is Cousin Eddie.  It made me feel like I had just seen Haley’s comet.

While all eyes were on Tiger Woods yesterday at the PGA championship, Brooks Koepka kept it together and won in convincing fashion.  However, Tiger’s feat was pretty amazing given all that he’s been through.  Everyone seemed to be rooting for Tiger.  Except Brooks Koepka.  Even after winning his 3rd major in the last 2 years, the press conference after the round had a focus on Tiger Woods.  When Koepka was asked how he felt about everyone rooting for Tiger to win, he simply responded “I don’t care what other people think.”  I was pretty blown away by this.  Here is this young golfer, in the spotlight after a huge win, not caring what other people think about him.  I got to thinking about this and realized that I could and should apply this to my life more often.  We are often so caught up in how society views us and concerned about our public perception that we can lose sight of who we are.  I encourage everyone to be themselves and not worry about what others think.  We all will have times in life where people are rooting against us.  Take it in stride, keep your head up and your eyes on your own goals.

Divide into teams and develop your schemes, But first head up the hill to take your daily red pill.

Station 2 – Head to where a kid might play, But avoid the Free Candy along the way (Playground)

Head to the Pavilion like you’ve won a million, and hold the plank while you await your rank
While waiting for all to finish, various plank exercises were performed, led by random PAX

Stimulus –> Response
One of the unique advantages that humans have over animals and other creatures is the ability to choose.  We are too often conditioned to think that a certain stimulus automatically generates an expected response, much like the dog in Pavlov’s experiments.  However, between the stimulus and the response, humans have the freedom to choose how they respond to a certain stimulus.  We can choose to have a negative reaction or choose to have a positive reaction.  We can let our circumstances dictate our response or we can choose our response regardless of our circumstances.  We all have the choice to decide how things are going to affect us.
I am often very guilty of not doing this.  If I get hit with a circumstance that I don’t like, too often I choose to allow it to bring me down or ruin my day.  However, I have come to realize that it was my choice that led to my attitude.  It’s a never-ending battle to overcome this thought process but I encourage you to choose the right attitude and not let your circumstances dictate your response.

The Mendoza Line
George Brett first described the Mendoza Line as a batting average of .200 or less.  He defined this as the epitome of mediocrity and thought that no major league baseball player should hit below this mark.  We all have our own “Mendoza Line” which we should strive to be above.  Go beyond the mediocrity.  We all have the intrinsic ability to overcome mediocrity but it is a choice whether or not we use our God-given abilities to do so.

Two Steps Forward, Two Steps Back
Often times in our lives, we are stuck in situations where we take two steps forward, only to be followed by two steps back.  We get stagnant.  However, we weren’t created to be “average” or for mediocrity.  We often go with the flow, just try to fit into the mold society has created for us.  But the first step to breaking this cycle is making the conscious decision to break out of the mediocrity.  Choose to make yourself and others around you better.  Family, friends, coworkers.  We all have it within us to break the cycle of mediocrity.

That’s 99 total reps for the warmup.  We now took a mosey around the portable johns to the open parking lot for the main event.

The Thang

I again explained that this workout was easy.  Conceptually easy that is.  I first shared the good news:  there will be no burpees during this workout.  Then the bad news…we would be performing 99 reps of several exercises with a 200 yard mosey in between sets.
I’ve got 99 problems but burpees ain’t one of them

Moleskin

We all have problems in this world, but for us, effort and will shouldn’t be one of them.  We all made the effort to get better this morning.  Our effort is one this we can control.  Control what you can control, leave alone what you have to leave alone.
At my niece’s graduation this past weekend, her class chose a class quote for the future:
“If we wait until we’re ready, we’ll be waiting for the rest of our lives.”  -Lemony Snicket
I thought this was very appropriate for my life so I wanted to share.  Too often we opt to wait and let things (good or bad) happen to us.  We should remember that it is up to us to make the conscious effort to get better and work towards goals.  Whether this is by physical action, prayer, or changing our thought process/mindset, it’s up to us to declare that we are ready.

F3 gives all of us the opportunity to be leaders and examples in our community.  We are tasked with being good examples at work, at home, and in our community.  So be the example.  Every day I come out here, I see men who I try to emulate.  Strive to live that life of integrity, honor, and high moral character. “I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor.” -Henry David Thoreau
I came upon this quote recently while reading “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and thought immediately about what we do with F3.  We as men and as human beings have the unique ability to change our situation by conscious endeavor.  Each morning when we wake up to work out, we make that conscious effort to make ourselves better.  While we may have spouses that encourage us, we have to take it upon ourselves to elevate our lives.  Happiness and fulfillment in our lives is achieved by conscious effort.  Prosciutto and I were able to spend some time sharing different things happening in our lives and it was refreshing to reconnect with a brother who is going through similar things in life.  There we were, standing in the pouring rain, talking about life and getting through each day by being the best husband, father, and co-worker that we can be.  We are incredibly lucky to be surrounded by such a strong group of men.  And to think, those men are there for us by their on conscious effort.

The Thang

Nervous mumblechatter ensued regarding the contents of my bag.  Once on the Riverwalk, the PAX were introduced to Bowling for Burpees.  Ten pins were set up in standard bowling fashion.  The PAX would take turns bowling and the number of pins knocked down equaled the number of merkins and the number left standing equaled the number of burpees.  In between merkins and burpees, we would run about 50 yards, do ab exercise of choice and then run back to do burpees.  Rinse and repeat for 10 frames.
Bowling for Burpees
Frame 1 – one pin down (one merkin), 9 left standing (9 burpees)
Frame 2 – Gutter ball (0 merkins, 10 burpees)
Frame 3 – Gutter ball (0 merkins, 10 burpees)
Frame 4 – Four pins down (4 merkins, 6 burpees)
At this time, the pins were moved closer together because, in true millennial fashion, there was discussion blaming the ball and the pins for the poor performance instead of accepting that we might just all be terrible bowlers.
Frame 5 – One pin down (1 merkin, 9 burpees)
Frame 6 – Two pins down (2 merkins, 8 burpees)
To show mercy to the PAX, at this time, the strategy was changed to do merkins for pins left standing, burpees for those knocked down.
Frame 7 – Six pins down (4 merkins, 6 burpees)
Frame 8 – Seven pins down (3 merkins, 7 burpees)
Frame 9 – Four pins down (6 merkins, 4 burpees)
Frame 10 – Seven pins down (3 merkins, 7 burpees)

From “The Alchemist” – “People are afraid to pursue their most important dreams because they feel that they don’t deserve them or that they’ll be unable to achieve them.”
We all have a destiny and have dreams for our life.  We all have the ability to take control of our lives and pursue our destiny, even if there is a chance of failure.  We should not let that chance of failure keep us from pursuing our dreams.  People are often satisfied with the status quo and refuse to pursue better things either because of the fear of failure or the thought of not deserving something better.  We all deserve better and don’t have to be stuck in the status quo and God has given each of us the tools to pursue greater things for ourselves, our family, and our friends.  F3 has been that medium to help me become a better husband to my wife, a better father to my children, and a better employee.  When I started with F3, I was the guy who didn’t really work out but in less than 4 months, I now look forward to working out most days of the week and feel an emptiness when I don’t.
As many of you know, my wife and I are living apart right now, fighting the legal battle that comes with blended families and relocation.  While it is tough on our family, we both realize that taking that leap of faith to pursue our dreams is worth it.  We had the option of staying in a place that we didn’t enjoy living and I could have kept a job that wasn’t fulfilling to me.  However, I felt as though God was calling me to greater things when this job was offered to me.  While there are stumbling blocks along the way, and the risk of failure is there, I couldn’t live my life knowing that I didn’t give it my all for my family.  Pursue your destiny but don’t forget to remember all the stops along the way.
