Extortion 17

On August 6, 2011, a U.S. Army CH-47D Chinook helicopter approached a landing zone in Afghanistan 40 miles southwest of Kabul. The helicopter, call sign Extortion 17, was on a mission to reinforce American and coalition special operations troops. Insurgents fired at the Chinook, severed one of its rear rotor blades, and brought it crashing to the ground. All 38 onboard perished instantly in the single greatest moment of sacrifice for Americans in the war in Afghanistan. Those killed were some of the U.S.’s most highly trained and battle-honed commandos.  31 US service personnel, one canine, and 7 Afghans were on the flight.

The Thang

3 Stations, we moseyed by the 3 stations on Qs sundial we are at each station for 6 minutes, every minute the pax at each station take an 8 second break to rotate then preform next exercise until calls everyone to converge.

CPO Stephen “Matt” Mills
Chief Petty Officer Stephen Matthew “Matt” Mills, was born Oct. 25, 1975 in Austin, Texas.
Shortly after his high school graduation, Matt enlisted and reported to the Great Lakes Naval Training center in Illinois in January 1997. Upon completion of basic training he was stationed aboard the USS KINCAID and served for three years.
Very early on, Matt knew he wanted to be wanted to be Navy SEAL and in June 2000 he entered Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training.
Upon completion, the Navy commissioned Matt Mills as a SEAL reporting to SEAL team Three on Sept. 11, 2001. Mills later completed the process that it takes to become a member of the elite Team 6.
Matt Mills completed numerous deployments around the world in support of the Global War on Terror and was a highly decorated combat veteran, having served in Iraq and Afghanistan and earned numerous awards including:
Two Bronze Stars Medal with Valor
Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Valor
Presidential Unit Citation
Purple Heart

Chief Mills was an avid hunter and enjoyed anything outdoors. Matt is survived by his widow Keri, sons Cash and Bryce, daughter Zoe, his parents Steve and Cheryl, and siblings Michael and Ashley.

  • V Square- very emotional for the entire PAX… we all got misty eyed. Passing the baton to Sunburn. V Square stepped up as the 1st AOQ of the boneyard and NO ONE CAN EVER TAKE THAT AWAY FROM MY BROTHER! I am extremely proud to know this man. He has been jet setting doing burpees while down range while on buses and even on planes…. I am inspired by his grace, his focus, and excitement that he always brings with him.

    Starting a new AO, like hacksaw, takes quantity.   You need guys to show up and lead.  CHECK.  hacksaw has grown leaps and bounds.  Step 2 – Quality.  Put on a beat down the way F3 is supposed to be done.  Develop Qs and leaders.  Focus on WHAT we are doing instead of laser focus on numbers.  CHECK.  The hacksaw crew is alive and well and will only accelerate from here.

        PAX each selected a partner for a little picnic at the pavilion.

        Each pair posted up at a picnic table and proceeded to do 3 rounds of:

        OYO 5 box jumps onto the picnic table- PAX were encouraged to jump all the way to the top of the table if able. 

        OYO 5 reps clean to shoulder level and overhead press with picnic table

        After completion, hold picnic table overhead until 6 is in or as long as possible.

        Where’s the cone?

        PAX then demanded cardio work and Q complied with laps around the soccer field – mosey the long sides of field, jail break the short ends of field. 3 laps. 

        After completion, repeat short end of field, alternating mosey and jailbreak until 6 is in.

        Credit to Skitch who had a good word a few weeks ago that stuck with me – we each have relationships in our life that require give and take. Sometimes we contribute as much as we feel we should and then wait for the other person to do their part and meet us halfway. Challenge to PAX was to find a relationship in their life where they were expecting their partner to “fill the gap” and instead serve them by giving 100%.

          In life things happen and you pull yourself up, adapt and do you best to advance. Iron Butt tells story of getting call from his now deceased father (SGT Major, Retired) stating don’t believe what you read in the newspaper this morning. Iron Butt opened newspaper that day to see headline: “Gilliland Indicted.” Three months later Iron Butt as a strapping 22-year old accompanied father to court for sentencing after father was convicted of extortion for threatening the life of his business partner and killing his dog. The judge went through my father’s resume. Fought in three foreign wars (WWII, Korea, Vietnam), received meritorious service medal and was a man who served his country well but had a hard time adapting to civilian life.

          After the Judge read my father’s service record and asked my father what we all knew from the earlier court case. Mr. Gilliland I find it hard to believe you committed this crime based on your service record. My father said. Yes sir. Then the judge asked who the young man was sitting next to him. “That’s my son, sir.”

          The judge asked the 22-year old version of Iron Butt. “So, what do you think I should do with your father? To this day, all I remember saying was: “My father committed a crime. It is ironic that he fought and served the country that will now punish him and put him behind bars.” Judge Thornburg said to my father: “If you can raise a son that will come and sit next to his father, and say these words he has said, I think it would be a shame to incarcerate you.” My father was put on three years probation and had to relinquish any firearms in his possession.

          That’s what I call grace. We all have done things we may not be proud of but the God I serve offers the same grace and love this Judge showed my father those many days ago. 

          Men. Show grace in your workplace. In your homes. With your friends. There is therefore no condemnation in Christ. But when life comes at you and you may make inappropriate or wrong choices, RECOVER! PULL yourself UP. ADAPT to the forces in play. And ADVANCE in this great adventure of your lives with grace and mercy.

            We all have a sphere of influence. Family, wife, kids, work, church or neighbors.  Like it or not people are watching, listening and in some cases emulating.  We can all act correctly, look good and be the man in our public life but it’s what we do in private that matters.  Examine your thought life, examine what you do when no one is looking.             We discovered today that Candu is scared of feral cats, the man is full of surprises.  We though he was fearless. 

            Ascot still has a broken tail light.  IronButt reminded him of that and Ascot responded with a blow horn. Honestly guys, I raised him better then that.  He must have learned that in college. 

            We were all so glad Moneyball finally posted at the Boneyard…Oh wait, not he didn’t he Fart Sacked.  We’ll forgive him this time, but do it again and you’re dead to me.

              Ended with Indian Run with Burpees around perimeter of cones.  Last 4 men complete  5 burpees then run to front of line, tagging the last man in line to stop and complete burpees.

              Our Core is something most of us ignore and in fact the most important area of our being.  Is your spiritual core where it needs to be?  If not, discipline and hard work is the only way to achieve results.
