COT

Spoke of the 7th abomination in the bible “He that sows discord among the brethren”. We have a duty to always strive for the unity of the church. God issued a warning that he would destroy anybody who divided and destroyed his church. The church in this sense isn’t a physical building, etc. but rather the unity of brothers and sisters in Christ. I spoke about the current culture and how it is normal to talk about people or judge others, especially behind a computer/phone screen. Our society makes it too easy to divide the church. I challenged myself and the PAX to two things: 1. Don’t judge or condemn others even when society says it is “normal” and 2. If you need to be forgiven, apologize and ask for it and if you need to forgive, do it. Don’t wait, do it immediately to restore those relationships and build unity amongst the church.

“Woodrider, what is that growing on your head” – Cavity Search during forward folds

Before the beatdown, Woodrider said “I have done legs all week, if you have a DORA with squats involved, I am leaving” To which, Q replied, “see you soon then”….Woodrider didn’t actually leave

Turns out my phone is actually louder than when I try to play my phone through my speaker….who would have thought?

The bleachers were considered unnecessary and even deemed evil….sorry fellas!

    COT

Basically told the same story I told on The Battery last week on Q (sorry if you heard it twice). Essentially, as leaders in our community and leaders among men, we need to be willing to stick our neck out for unpopular opinions, even if it means doing so alone. When something is unethical, unjust, or just flat out feels wrong, don’t stand by idly. Be a leader! We live in a society where it is easier to go with the flow to keep up our appearances or social states. Don’t be afraid to stand out in a crowd, it is what we are called to do.

If anyone knows a good independent auditor…..Mandela amongst other PAX disagreed with the apps timer of 50 seconds on/10 seconds on. Said it was more like 70 seconds on/3 seconds off. Obviously, the only way to resolve this is an audit.

Kraken burpees were not a fan favorite….but neither were burpees….but neither were (non-hill) hill runs….PAX didn’t like Q today is ultimately where this sentence ends.

Apparently, Free Bird runs hills for fun, so he turned it into a race. Everyone else was fine with him winning first place on the way up! There was no medal ceremony, however.

Choose your 10-count PAX wisely, it could mean the difference between getting a full 10 seconds or more versus 3 seconds to count down from 10 as fast as possible.

      COT

Discussed a recent situation in my life and how my wife and I were able to work through it appropriately. Long story short: we had a confrontation with a sports coach recently due to some bias, narcissism, etc. My wife and I decided that we needed to point it out and have a conversation. During that conversation, we were verbally attacked and our character was put into question. It really got me thinking about it and I recalled a quote from a book I read not long ago: “certain types of people become more and more disappointed with you once they realize they cannot manipulate you”

So, how does this play into the COT and challenge for the PAX? Well, simple really, we live in a society where it is frowned upon to speak up when these things happen for the sake of salvaging relationships and keeping social status where it is (Some of us are guilty of this for sure). Don’t be afraid to call a situation for what it is, especially if it is negatively affecting your family and those around them/you. We are called to be men of integrity and honesty, and that includes having candid conversations that might cause discomfort amongst people around us. Do it anyways, don’t be afraid to stand alone instead of in a group of pretenders. Let’s be the men we are called to be!

Clothespin decided this morning that he didn’t like Q anymore after burpees were called more than once….this was news to Q, I thought it was that way all along!

Anybody heard from Deep Dish?? FIVE!

A lot of PAX, Q included, were on the motivation struggle bus this morning. We worked through it with some good ole fashioned mumble chatter and fun (if you call running hills fun)

The hill sucks, let’s do it again. Also, weighted vests on the hill suck even worse (Ask Pipeline and Cooter)

Shared something I had heard in a recent sermon with the PAX. Essentially, a simple tactic to try and use to keep your heart clean and not let sin compile. When we do, say, etc. something that is against our values, or a sin, confess and reconcile with God right away. Don’t wait and let it build up!

        Moleskin

John Doe has a lot of capacity for mumble chatter considering the modifications….got fairly aggressive at one point when no one else was chatting with him!

Apparently all marriage counselors tell you the same thing…Who would have thought?

Pocket Taco should be Dees Nuts, FNG Form anyone?

Shared a little snippet of wisdom from the book “Life is Messy” The idea in the book is that comfort should only be used when necessary. Comfort is a beautiful servant, but an ugly master. Comfort can be just as addicting as any other addiction out there. Challenged myself and the PAX to keep growing and stay uncomfortable. As I was saying this, cold winds were blowing in our face, so we clearly had no trouble staying uncomfortable this morning….

Gave Lanyard a hard time for not being on AOQ duty….but not too hard of a time.

My goal was to keep the PAX warm given the sub-20 weather outside. Considering that halfway through Hey Buddy had only a short-sleeved shirt on, I guess that goal was met.

Murder bunnies were a big hit….as always…..honestly though, much less complaining than I anticipated given my own thoughts of the beatdown at the moment.

Spoke about two facets of life that I need to work on in the New Year: 1) Staying Uncomfortable and not letting comfort control my life and decisions and 2) Being Interruptible when God guides me towards his plan. The reality is, each New Year, we all set goals and resolutions, etc. This is great and we should continue setting those goals and resolutions. One of the things I thought about when reading a book “Life is Messy” by Matthew Kelly is that we set these goals under the assumption that our schedule and life will not change, or “be interrupted” during the new year. The reality is, God interrupts you with his plan when you are so focused on yours. Keep sight of your goals and strive to meet them but also be interruptible. Allow God to guide you and work in your life and heart throughout the next year.

Spoke about the Christmas Story in Luke and how it has got me thinking about the plans we make for our life and how we sometimes stray from God’s plan to make our own. In the story of Jesus’ birth, Mary was a young teenager when she was approached by the angel telling her she was to give birth to the Messiah. The reality is, Mary had plans. She was to merry Joseph, grow up and start a family. She must have been terrified. However, she did not let the fear overcome her, she stuck with the plan that the angel laid out for her. So many times in life, the reality is that we make our own plans. We know how we want our days, weeks and even years to end up. In the end, we must shift our way to thinking to allow God’s plan to enter our hearts, especially when we least expect it. We must allow God to interrupt our lists and our plans so that we can live in glory for him. My challenge to myself and all PAX in attendance was to be open to interruption from God’s plan. It is always better than our own plan even when we don’t feel like it is.

First three PAX to show up (myself included) are all dealing with upper body injuries/pain of some sort. PAX asked Q to modify with less upper body. Turns out Q already had a Leg Day planned. Worked out great!

PAX are well aware of their own limitations….especially when it comes to 200 pickle pointers. “We will never last that long”

Workout consisted of splitting the 400M track into four quadrants (2 straightaway quadrants and 2 curves). PAX ran (it is track day after all) until whistle blew from Q. Q had watch set to blow whistle at 2,3,4, and 5 minute intervals. Once whistle blew, PAX did the following depending on where they were on the track:

                • Quadrant 1: 25 Burpees
                • Quadrant 2: 50 Merkins
                • Quadrant 3: 50 Squats
                • Quadrant 4: 50 BBSU

Q went until he had been in all four quadrants and then switched the exercises above to 10, 25, 25, 25 for remainder of time. Did this for 30 minutes.

Finished with two laps of Indian Runs followed by a final blow of the whistle in the burpee quadrant for 10 burpees. Closed out with 100 Toe Merkins for fallen F3 brother from F3 Franklin.

Shared some words about being willing and able to “have the hard conversations”. So often, I get caught up in letting others handle it or avoiding those conversations when it comes to situations that are unjust or potentially could cause conflict. As leaders, one of the things we need to be able to do is to hone our skills in that area so that we can have those hard conversations. The reality is, we live in the 21st Century where nearly everything is considered offensive. We can’t let that stop us from starting the hard conversations, calling out what is unjust as unjust when we see it and making the tough decisions if needed after those conversations. This is great skill to work on for myself and many other PAX of F3 Chattanooga.

Discussed this workout plan with MIA at work day before, he said he would come because he like the concept. I did not, however, disclose the rep counts, which was a point of contention at the beginning…..

Lots of good run groups formed with MC abound.

Cavity Search got stuck with 25 burpees back to back, he thought it is because I was doing it on purpose, but really he is just very skilled at keeping the same pace in his laps. I call that skill, not coincidence!

PAX set up coupons in the middle of the field going sideline to sideline. Performed 11s starting with 10 Merkins on first sideline and 1 Jump Squat on second sideline. The kicker was this: After finishing Merkins on one side of the field, PAX sprinted to coupon in between the two sidelines and performed 5 Blockees. PAX then rifle carried from middle of field to other sideline and performed jump squat(s). Rifle carry back to center and perform 5 Curls before running back to original sideline. Repeat for 9 Merkins, 2 Jump Squats…..all the way to 1 Merkin, 10 Jump Squats.

In the middle of the Elevens, I realized that my hands felt like they might fall off, so we took a quick audible and ran two laps around the field to warm up a bit before finishing the second half of the Elevens.

Once Elevens were complete, we paired up. PAX 1 went to center of field and began doing Shoulder Presses. PAX 2 started at the sideline and lunged to PAX 1. Once PAX 2 got to the center of the field they took over for shoulder presses while PAX 1 ran back to sideline and then lunged back to center of field. Did this for 2 rounds of Shoulder Presses, 2 rounds of Curls and 2 rounds of Bent-Over back rows.

Finished with Circle Merkin – PAX circle up in Plank position and we went around the circle doing merkins. Started with 1 Merkin and made our way to 5 Merkins before time ran out.

Shared some snippets from a speech on YouTube with the PAX by Denzel Washington titled “Put God First”. The main points in the speech were this 1) Keep God First; 2) Fail Big but Never stop reaching for your goals and 3) You will never see a U-Haul behind a hearse. Spoke to PAX about how this resonated with me. In order to meet our goals, we have to keep God first and stay disciplined and consistent in our approach to meeting those goals. Lastly, I emphasized that whatever is reaped from the benefits of keeping God first and meeting our goals, whether financially, physically, spiritually, etc., we can’t truly experience the joy of those moments without sharing it with those around us. If money, donate. If physical gifts, help someone else reach their physical goals. Ultimately, the joy in life is pushing and loving those around us to strive for and meet their goals. You can’t take anything with you from a material standpoint when you go, so make sure to share it with those around you. Always strive not to just make a living, but to make a difference! I recommend watching the speech, I posted it on the Parliament channel if interested.

PAX subconsciously kept expecting and preparing for the sprinklers to come on during our workout. It was decided early on that we would certainly audible if that happened. Not sure if the sprinklers were turned off or if the pipes were frozen.

PAX paired up with a partner. Did exercises DORA style. There were two sets of cones set up from the start line; one about 25 yards from start and one about 50 yards from start. Once partnered up, one PAX began the exercise from the list below while one ran the suicides. Second PAX ran to first cone and did 10 merkins, run back to start; Run to second cone, do 3 burpees and then run back to start. PAX then flipped exercises and suicides until reps were achieved cumulatively. After about 10-15 minutes, we switched to 5 merkins and 2 burpees. After about 10 more minutes we switched to 5 merkins and no burpees. PAX enjoyed that audible!

Spoke this morning about being there for others. Specifically, I talked about how when we get out in the gloom early with our F3 brothers, and we pair up for DORAs, it is easy to find the motivation and actions that will help make sure we carry some of our brothers burden. The motivation men find out there behind strength, core and cardio exercises is unbelievable when you know doing 75 reps for your partner is better than 50, we push through! I got to thinking about this concept in life. While we are all very good at doing this in the gloom with DORAs, do we stop to think about out F3 brothers, our family members, our colleagues, even strangers, when they are struggling? Can we find the right words or actions of comfort. As men, it is harder to be there for each other in this way than by running or doing reps. It is important we find ways to make sure we carry this outside of the gloom when we find that a brother, or anyone for that matter, needs us at 5:30 pm instead of 5:30 am and in a mental or spiritual way instead of a physical way with reps. Something to keep in mind and challenge ourselves to be better at going forward, myself especially.

Broke Second Base’s block “cherry” Turns out he likes his workouts “hard”.

PAX verbally cheered with burpees at second cone were called off. Turns out, nobody actually likes burpees, except maybe Gretel….
