COT

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” – John 15:13

Yesterday was the 5th anniversary of the terrorist attack on Chattanooga that claimed the lives of 1 Navy sailor and 4 Marines of mine and Nordictrack’s old unit: Mike Battery. There were many memories and tributes yesterday but what I choose to remember about that horrible day is that all five of those men died either shielding others (including civilians in the park) from the terrorist or actively engaging the terrorist with a large firepower disadvantage. All five gave their lives for other Marines and sailors, for other community members, for other humans.

The ultimate sacrifice made by those five men showed true courage and selflessness. Ultimate examples of what it means to Live Third.

Blindside closed us out by leading us in prayer.

No playlist today as we were doing laps around the school.

FNG-Pork Chop is Hambone’s 2.0. We had him questioning our sanity by 0545.

Burrito. That’s it. That’s the comment.

Backfire’s work van has a backup beeper that I bet you could have heard from #Parliament. It’s hilariously loud.

We actually got NordicTrack to go to Hardee’s for coffeeteria! It was a Festivus Miracle!

    COT

Watched a video the other day of an Australian Football broadcaster opening up about a complication that his daughter had soon after being born. The video was called The Last Time I Cried and it really hit home with me about how men are often expected to be the rock or less emotional member of a relationship.

So many times you’ll see a wife or partner as the more openly emotional member of the relationship, and in those times the man has to comfort his wife/partner and doesn’t have the opportunity to outwardly express his own emotions.

I encouraged the PAX to reflect on the last time they cried or felt overwhelmed with emotion, and to talk about that moment with someone they feel comfortable with.

John 8:1-11 – Put Down the Rock

Jesus was teaching when interrupted by religious leaders who wanted to trap him into either renouncing Mosaic Law or going against the Roman rule they were under. They did so by wanting him to approve the stoning of a woman they had caught in the act of adultery. If he says don’t stone her he would be going against their interpretation of Jewish Law. If he said to stone her, he would be going against Caesar and Roman Law. Blind with rage, with rocks in hand, and looking for a reason to riot they pushed Jesus for a response.

Jesus, instead doesn’t give way to their emotional show of rage. He calmly ignores them at first. Then he looks at them with compassionate understanding of the entire situation, and says for whoever is perfect (without any guilt for your own decisions) to throw the first stone.

After hearing this they slowly drop their rocks and leave without attacking/judging the woman (or Jesus). With a simple and calm response Jesus had made the riot leaders reflect upon their own sins before judging others (He also turned their trap back on them).

When we read this, it is tempting to look at the world today and associate the rioters with those we don’t agree with both figuratively and in action. However, the challenge is to first view this story as if YOU are one of the rioters. Are you so focused on judging other’s actions, that you have become blind to your own poor decisions or opinions? Though, there are so many people making truly poor choices that are wrong no matter the justification they use, we are called to be slow to speak and quick to listen (James 1:19). To view others as more important than ourselves and love first (Philippians 2). IF these are our first steps, then we will be better equipped to stand bold in our faith, defend our faith when needed, and lovingly/calmly respond to those formed against it. Putting down the rock in our own hands we can then change the hearts of those that oppose our faith and need it most.

There are three areas of our lives we need to maintain in order to achieve happiness and fulfillment: Our physical health, our mental health, and our spiritual health. Each of these areas of our lives requires intentional growth in order to prevent stagnation. Focusing too much on one area while neglecting the others leads to imbalance. Imbalance can cause issues such as poor health, depression, and unhappiness.

The physical is easiest to talk about, and as F3 is a great place for physical development. Though what one puts into their body has just as much effect as what we get out of our body in these workouts. One can easily out-eat their exercise.

The mental health requires exercise of the mind. Yearning to learn and grow mentally takes intention. Over time, the mind can become strong like our muscles. If you look at some of the greatest minds in the world, they all have one thing in common; the intense desire to continue to learn and expand their minds.

Spiritual health can encompass many things in our lives. Positive influences in our lives can lift our spirits and make us whole. While negative people and circumstances can wear us down over time. Consider what is in your life, and where you spend your time. Are you going to church as often as you want to? Are you spending enough time with your kids?

Make sure your priorities align with your passions, and you will enjoy fulfillment. While balance is needed, having strength in one area can help support the others. Ever thought you could not do any more Merkins until someone comes along and encourages you? Focus on positive influences in your life, and get rid of negative ones. Push your mind like we push our bodies in F3. Try to bring yourself beyond the point of exhaustion. But make sure you allow yourself to rest and recover.

Who are you? Who am I? It’s so easy to answer this question casually and not give it much thought. Most people like myself just answer with their occupation. “I am a lawyer”, “I’m a mechanic”, “I’m a _______”…………..My wife is the “bread winner” in my household. Many years ago this was very hard for me to come to terms with, but I did eventually. I figured out fairly recently “who I was”, and it did NOT matter who brought home the most money. I am a father/dad. That title encompasses many different roles……..nurse, hero, doctors, mr. fixit, chef, waiter, chauffeur, spiritual leader………. the list goes on and on. That is WHO I AM, not WHAT I DO. Who are you? This is a question that can be answered quickly, or you can delve deep and answer that question truthfully for yourself. WHO ARE YOU?

              COT

One might notice this workout was themed based upon stereotypes from the countries represented.

YHC began with a word about stature. Compared to YHC, Oil Can is small in stature. Compared to some of the Huey HIM, YHC is small in stature. Ironically, during the workout, someone pointed the ease in which Oil Can completed reps due to his “130 pound frame”.

Perspective is an amazing thing. Today’s exercise numbers and exercises were chosen to honor Oil Can. He’s 25 (almost) and those were some of his favorites. Additionally, he comes from Melbourne. This is a city often underestimated for its cultural significance to Australia, ironic again, considering its the second most populous city. Again, perspective.

While small in stature, Oil Can’s impact is NOT small in stature. He is a true HIM for our community.

Shouldn’t we all take a lesson from this? A young man, from a foreign land, came here, now is a part of F3. Takes a lot of courage, Grace, and being intentional for him to do what he does.

Can’t we also be graceful? Courageous enough to to be compassionate while holding strong to our sense honor?

Upper, Lower, Abs, & Cardio in the Courtyard

A little friendly competition had the Pax split into 4 Teams with 3-4 per team rotating through 4 stations

Upper Body: Merkins, Tricep Dips, Decline Shoulder Taps – Each member does a different exercise and rotates through the exercises after a member has done 25 Merkins

Lower Body: Box Jumps, High Knee Step Ups, Monkey Humpers – Each member does a different exercise and rotates through the exercises after a member has done 20 Box Jumps

Abs: American Hammers, LBCs, Flutter Kicks – Each member does a different exercise and rotates through the exercises after a member has done 25 American Hammers

Cardio: (This Station was timed) Starting in front of the Courtyard with 5 Burpees, run down in front of the school and up the hill to the 5th light pole, 5 Burpees, then run back to the Courtyard ending with 5 more Burpees. Total run of ~200 yards and 15 Burpees

After the 6 completed the last 5 Burpees the timer stopped & each team rotated stations

The Catch of the Friendly Competition was teams were not competing against each other, rather competing against themselves. In Round 2 each team had to beat it’s posted Cardio time from Round 1 or suffer a penalty. Happy to report that each team beat their Round 1 time by at least 10 seconds and we were penalty free

With 5 minutes remaining, Moseyed back to the flag for a COP round of Answer the Bell. Sets of 1 minute Coupon Exercises where the Q called DOWN and Pax ‘answered’ with UP. Exercises included Overhead Tricep Extensions, Full Curls, Overhead Press, & Bent Over Rows. When the Pax member could no longer answer the bell, they brought the coupon down and did Coupon Squats for the remainder of the minute

Recycle passed along ‘Freed To Lead’ to me to read a couple weeks ago. I initially skimmed the book and thought to myself I knew what it was about. After 4 or 5 days I actually started reading the book and found out I had no clue what it was about, per the usual.
I haven’t yet finished the read, but I have learned a bit more about the 3 F’s of F3:

The 1st F, Fitness, is not just about getting in shape, but rather about Accountability & Staying in Shape. A Magnet that keeps you coming back

The 2nd F, Fellowship, is not just about enjoying your time with the follow men of F3, but rather having the opportunity to build authentic relationships that stick, the Glue if you will

The 3rd F, Faith, is not just about being around like minded men, but rather being part of something bigger than yourself and having that make real changes in our communities, the Dynamite

Given that it is 3 Amigos week at the Lions Den, my challenge to the Pax is to reach out to each other through Group Texts, Slack Channels, HDHH, Convergences, whatever means possible and make a connection. Hold ourselves accountable and start planting seeds for some meaning relationships.

As Men we do not show up at F3 for Ourselves, rather we show up for the men standing beside each of us

Not a lot of Mumble Chatter this morning. We kept moving and with all of the Hum-Didity in air it seemed to quiet the Pax. However, we did learn that Burrito is in the market for a Weed Eater. He said he’s never had one and wanted to try something new

Busyness. I struggle with being busy. This feels like a good thing most of the time, busy with work, with family. But sometimes I am busy with work when I should be resting with family. Sometimes I need to recharge myself so I can be a better father. Instead, I tend to fill every moment with the next task and sometimes my family doesn’t get the patience and support from me that they should.

“Your busyness doesn’t mean you’re being effective. Effectiveness is about the ‘what’, not the ‘how much’ “.

“Busyness serves as a kind of existential reassurance, a hedge against emptiness; obviously your life cannot be silly or trivial or meaningless if you are so busy, completely booked, in demand every hour of the day.”
