We have been having some great theme days at Hill City for the holidays, so I wanted to add one on for Hanukkah. While not incredibly important religiously, it is a story where lessons can be drawn. Principally, perseverance in the face of adversity. It may not be the ancient Syrian army you are dealing with, but we all face our challenges. Perseverance brings its rewards.

    Remix of a workout we did Nov 2018:
    We circled the light pull at the corner of Boob Hill closest to Mount Midoriyama

    Round 1:  5 Burpees, 20 merkins OYO, 20 Squats (IC), lunge walk down the sidewalk at the base of the hill then (after the pax were all lined up facing the bulge) sprint to the summit and back down to starting light

    Round 2:  6 Burpees, 22 merkins OYO, 22 Squats (IC), sub in Bearcrawl for lunge walking and sprint again and back to start

    Round 3:  7 Burpees, 24 merkins OYO, 24 Squats (IC), sub in duck walk for bearcrawl and sprint up again and back to start

    Round 4:  This time we faced the hill from the starting light and sprinted up and down to the opposite corner then 8 Burpees, 13 merkins OYO and sprint back up and over the hill

    Round 5: 8 burpees, 13 merkins OYO, sprint back up and over hill to opposite corner

    Round 6: 8 burpees, 13 squats IC, sprint back up and over hill to light

    Round 7: 8 burpees, 13 squats IC, SSH x 21 with silent counting again, we SUCCESSFULLY STOPPED TOGETHER. Our reward was a last sprint up and over the hill to opposite corner.

    Find time today to do one thing outside your comfort zone; something positive like encouraging someone who isn’t the easiest to encourage or that sales call you don’t want to make. Push yourself don’t hurt yourself doesn’t stop after the gloom!

      22 men strong with 2 FNGs. Talked about taking the next step when unsure. Related it towards cliff jumping. Can be intimidating and full of fear at first but once you take that step and jump, it can be invigorating. Challenged everyone to take that first step whether it be in a new career, a tough conversation with a friend or family member, or in approaching that difficult client.

        Partner 2 completes a cycle of 10 Mercans and 10 Big Boi Sit ups on the path waiting for Partner 1 to finish

        Once complete, Partner 1 assumes the Mercans and Big Bois

        partner 2 bear crawls half way up Mt. Madoriyama, runs the rest of the way up, then back down.

        Flap Jack the starting position and repeat

        Mosey a short lap

        Climb the Mountain… With your arms

        Stay with your partner

        partner 1 goes back down to the bottom of the stairs.

          This was a You vs You workout. You could go as fast or as slowly as you wanted. And if you only focused on yourself, you wouldn’t notice what the men around you were struggling or dealing with. You also wouldn’t notice who had come before you, or who was following in your footsteps. Take some time today and pay attention to someone else in your circle, and ask them how they’re doing. Maybe you have perspective on something that you can help them with. Maybe they’ve been there before you, and can offer advice to you.


          It’s easy to get self-absorbed. But there are a lot of men traveling the same path you are, who either can help you, or need help from you. Be a brother.

              While attending pre-marital counseling with Laces Out, I found out that I was a “fixer” -someone that already starts determining a solution before they have received all of the information. I learned that most times my SO would just want to vent to me, which was separate from asking for advice. I have a very hard time turning off my “fixer” mentality and just listen.

              Be cognizant of others you interact with. They may want advice, or they may just want to be heard.

This shall come to pass as a partner exercise where one partner doth perform an exercise whilst the other partner doth travel about an undetermined distance, however the first partner hath no minimum requirement nor the team hath no maximum requirement, other than returning to one partner and rotating untilst finished.

                The missus and I celebrated 7 years of marriage over the weekend, and made the unusual choice to bring our kids with us for our weekend getaway to the NC mountains. I hadn’t seen much of my family this quarter due to work, and I just wanted to spend time with everyone as a cohesive group. It’s easy to work too much, and not be around as often as we’d like. As men, we’re responsible with providing. But never forget *why* you’re working- whether it be for your family, your wife, or to improve yourself so as to attract a partner. Work without purpose is toil – shoutout to Skitch for his prior eloquence on this topic.

                  Brisk morning but warmed up quickly… though the temperature stayed the same.

                  Took an extended mosey around the circle before finishing up under Veteran’s bridge for a brief warm-up focused on shoulders and quads.

                  After the warm-up, we moseyed over to the stairs or “the pit.” Following the theme from Dante’s Inferno, we were given a guide through the 9 levels of the underworld, in the following order:

                  Once completing the descent, PAX had to take another lap up the mountain before beginning the Jacob’s Ladder portion of the workout, as well. Below was the progression of Jacob’s Ladder, which started at Level 9 and progressed up to Level 1.

                  Curfew showed up today in nothing but shorts and a t-shirt. One of our PAX offered a jacket and gloves but Curfew refused. Toughness award of the day was already won and we hadn’t even started. 

                  Callahan claims he left a part of himself down in the pit and would return for it next week. Possible search party will be needed.
