Excuse Me the Mental Out Ways the Physical

QIC:  John Doe

Date: 01/20/22

PAX: Mansiere, Hambone, FNG – Moose Knuckle, Burrito, Yellow 5, Laces Out, Pebbles, Zima, Sidekick, Whitler, Recycle, Jorts, Proscuitto, 8 Mile

AO: Smackdown

Conditions

Where to start? It was a day or two post thaw from a recent snow that covered the mountain. Rain had drizzled in earlier that morning to only stop just before startex. It was wet and muddy. There was an 8-12 mph northeast wind calmly blowing across. The temperatures were hovering in the mid-30’s but the windchill made it feel more like the high 20’s.

The conditions were so unfavorable that YQIC considered changing the planned events to be more PAX “friendly” but decided against doing so in order to stick with the theme. A decision that may or may not have been the correct one, but one that felt necessary.

COP

Mostly traditional type excercises. LBAC – 15 (IC), Rev LBAC – 15 (IC), Slow (at Proscuitto’s request) Tea pots – 10 (IC), FF – 10 (yes IC), Willy Mays Hays – 10 (IC), No SSH because YQIC is injured (wait…is that an excuse?)

The Thang

To start we counted off in groups of 5. However, much like YQICs Wordle game the math was a little off. After having to get most of the PAX to stop walking and talking we finally made it to our destination on the other side of the bleachers in the field close to the pull-up bars. At this point YQIC realized his count was off and we need to be in groups of 3 and not 5. Quick reshuffle and we were off. One would say we were having a solid start to the morning.

No Fun Bus

PAX A – Bearcrawl 20 yds to pull up bar does 1 pull up then relieve PAX B

PAX B – 10 Toe Tap Merkins (easy way) then AmRep Aqua mans until tagged by PAX A; Once tagged by PAX A then bearcrawl 20 yds to PAX C

PAX C – 10 Dive Bombers then AmRep Aqua mans until tagged by PAX B; Once tagged by PAX B then bearcrawl 20 yds to pull up bar and do 1 pull up then relieve PAX A

Once each PAX in the group has cycled through and done 1 pull up then the round is complete. The cycle continues for the duration only to increase by 1 pull up each round. Round 1 = 1 pull-up per PAX, Round 2 = 2 pull ups per PAX, etc…

We did 3 full rounds….more to come on this

On Your Six

Big Boi Sit Up – 60 reps

4 Way Crunches (LBC, Left Oblique Crunch, Right Oblique Crunch, Reverse LBC) – 50 reps or 200 Total

Heals to Heaven – 60 reps

Flutter Kicks – 150 Hard Count or 300 Total

1/2 Sit Up – 100 reps called (PAX did AmRep for 2 minutes instead)

COT

Sticking with the theme from the previous week YQIC referenced a recent series by Andy Stanly called “Paper Walls.” Just like in the COT at Hacksaw and this particular message from Andy, the premise centered around excuses. Which the majority of the PAX this particular morning failed at completely. Excuses in many cases turn into “reasons”, but that is a false cover or a paper wall put up instead. Those reasons tend to become a “because”. I didn’t do the bearcrawls because my hands were cold, I did SSH instead of aqua man’s, because I didn’t want to get wet or I’m here going through the motions so that’s good enough. An excuse can be defined as a lie to ourselves about ourselves. Over time it can even become a believable story or a “reason” why we do or don’t do something.

These little excuses can become bigger excuses. They can begin to pile up and snowball on us, eventually effecting our friendships, our marriages, our relationships with our kids. The good news is we can control them. We can shift the narrative. Our excuses should be more geared to good, and toward a growing relationship with Jesus. If we can do the little things well and not make an excuse then He will open the door to empower us to do BIG things well.

BALL OF MAN: One of the OG’s himself Whittler (so good to see you) lead us out in prayer. Continued prayers for several PAX out there.

Moleskin

YQIC was extremely excited about this trip to the mountain. There was potential for several old school guys showing up and it was going to feel a bit like old times. Admittedly, I was a little giddy at the thought of it. Got there so early out of pure excitement. Couldn’t sleep. The attendance did not disappoint. We had a mix of old school, new school, guys from near and far. Solid group of HIMs, no doubt.

ALOT of mumble chatter this particular morning. Plenty of laughter, plenty of jokes, and plenty of standing around. Maybe because it did feel like somewhat of a reunion to some. Or maybe that’s just the identity of Smackdown, only time will tell.

Halfway through the workout several PAX had succumbed to creating an entirely new workout through modifications. Not due to injury or lack of physical ability but because of conditions. I like to image had it been dry and 65 there would have been more effort given. So YQIC modified too. That’s when we hit the six for 20 minutes. Everyone did their best to find a dry spot. It felt a little intentional that everyone (but one) made sure they were far away from me. Maybe it was from agitation, frustration, or plain coincidence?? Who knows? Anyhow, thank you 8 Mile for not treating me like a leper:)

Note: Pebbles has always been one of the fastest bear crawlers I’ve seen, but Zima might just take the cake. Even with an injured back that dude was motoring.

Jorts apparently has an incredible story about a tiny horse. I hope to hear it one day.

“It could be raining.” – Pebbles

“Why can’t you hear a pterodactyl scream in the bathroom?……They’re dead” – Whittler

“At least there were no themes today.” – Proscuitto

News

Zima’s announcement presentation was phenomenal. Precise, direct, and to the point with an incredible flow. I hope I got it all.

    Conditions

It was a bit brisk this morning hovering in the twenties somewhere with a nice and what felt like a somewhat heavy breeze. That could’ve just been Escobar’s hind music

    COP

Slow Mosey over to the Commons Pavilion. Split into two groups roughly 15-20 yards apart. Group A bear crawled to Group B and back to the starting point, while Group B held plank. Group B then bear crawled to Group A and back to their starting point while Group A held plank. Rinse & Repeat (did 2 rounds to get the PAX warm)

    The Thang

Kept the exercises pretty simple and contained. The main focus was on burn out and maintaining proper form. Took the Q a lot of thought and planning for this one.

    Merkin Mania
    Regular Merkin – 30 reps

    Diamond Merkin – 20 reps

    Wide Merkins – 30 reps

    COT

QIC referenced a recent sermon by Andy Stanly called “Paper Walls”. The premise around the message centered around excuses. Excuses in many cases turn into “reasons”, but that is a false cover or a paper wall put up instead. Those reasons tend to become a “because”. I didn’t do this because, I couldn’t make it because, I can’t tell him/her because, etc. (EXCUSE – REASON – BECAUSE). An excuse can be defined as a lie to ourselves about ourselves. Over time it can even become a believable story or a “reason” why we do or don’t something.

As we start 2022 there are a lot of good things we want to carry with us from the previous year (friendships, families, etc.) However, don’t let an excuse old or new be one of those things. Don’t carry that excuse with you. My Dad always says to me and even my daughters, “There’s no time like the present.” Start now don’t wait. Procrastination is the theif of time.

BALL OF MAN: Our guy Madoff closed us out in prayer this morning. Continued prayers for several PAX

      Paschendale a Ramrod Special
PAX splits up into two groups (Group A & Group B). Speaker w/ music in “center”, each group distanced 30ft away on either side. Group A splits off; half PAX does burpees continuously as the other half army crawls to the “center” and bear crawls back to start; PAX switch – burpees go to army/bear crawl and army/bear crawl go to burpees. Group B does the same on the other side. Rinse and repeat for duration of “Paschendale” by Iron Maiden.

      COT

Bobby Allen w/ Legacy Leadership says, “God never wastes a hurt.” Encouraged PAX that no matter what hurt they may be going through or have gone through in the past it isn’t wasted. Many times we are used as vessels for a greater good, whether it’s for us directly, indirectly, or for someone else. Challenged the PAX to look for the positive in those hurts and know that it was done in a purposeful good to help us grow closer to HIM

The last 10 minutes was on each PAX to do as many rounds as they could with no rest

        COT

Asked each PAX member to take about 30-60 seconds to think of one/two words to describe what F3 means to them. Each member shared their one/two words. Incredible to hear what each person had to say. Brotherhood, Commitment, Accountability, Immediate Inclusion, Inspiration, Comradery to name a few. QIC thanked the PAX for being there and continuing to be there each week. These men are what bring us back

A lot to unpack here. Cold Play didn’t have to charge for any jokes because all of them were stellar. Good conversation around Britney SPears and Miley Cyrus (finished with Party in The USA). A lot of discussion around that rug burn like mark from too many sit ups on concrete. If you’ve had you know what I’m talking about. As Picabo said, you forget about it until it burns in the shower. What is that called? A tramp stamp? A Butt Cherry? A Chimp Callus?

          COT

QIC is currently reading Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield. The book is based off the battle of Thermopylae and the 2nd invasion of Persia to Greece. This is also the basis of the movie 300. Below is quote that helps paint a picture:

“It is said that on the eve of battle, he was told by a nativeof Trachis that the Persian archers were so numerous that, when they fired their volleys, the mass of arrows blocked out the sun. Dienekes, however, quite undaunted by this prospect, remarked with a laugh, “Good. Then we’ll have our battle in the shade.”

As men, how often do we have our battle in the shade? In the darkness? And alone? There’s going to be battles in the dark, but it’s alot easier when you have a strong support system of men around you. At F3 with work in the darkness of the gloom every morning, but we do it together.

Would’ve preferred the slow jams have stayed home

Talked about some history around how the Parliament AO came about from growth to the name. Transitioned to “Judging” and how we/I tend to do this often in my day to day. Read one of my favorite quotes from the book The Shack. See below. Encouraged PAX to look not to judge and themselves above others, but to look to understand and see others as equals.

“Then it is you who determines good and evil. You become the judge. And to make things more confusing, that which you determine to be good will change over time and circumstance. And then beyond that and even worse, there are billions of you each determining what is good and what is evil. So when your good and evil clashes with your neighbors, fights and arguments ensue and even wars break out….And if there is no reality of good that is absolute, then you have lost any basis for judging…Judging requires you to think yourself superior over the one you judge.”

QIC took a piece out of Ravi Zacharius book; Four Absolutes: Evil, Justice, Love, Forgiveness. Universe/University – Unity & Diversity. You will never have unity and diversity on the outside until you have unity and diversity on the inside. It starts with us internally before we can grow and help externally.

What does it mean to be human? Creation – we are not here by accident. We are here by Divine Purpose & Divine Pattern. You have an intrinsic worth. What belongs to God? Who’s image is on you?

QIC told a story of a care accident with several people involved. Parents lost children and there was on survivor. This survivor was badly injured with reconstructed face. Her identity was mixed up another student and no knew until she came out of a coma 4 months later. Her parents had thought they lost her, and buried her. Only it was the other student they buried. Meanwhile, the other parents thought their daughter was alive only to find out she was buried 4 months prior.

You see, there is a particular value to you. Your name is given by those who brought you to being. You can alwasy replace a worker, but you can never replace a person. All persons are unique and distinct. Don’t let anyone minimize who you are as a singular individual. Don’t try to be someone you’re not.

God’s image is on you in a general sense. God’s unique gifting is in you on a particular sense. You were created intentionally for a divine design

The workout truly reformed us today. Burrito doesn’t seem to talk as much as he use to, or maybe we’re just use to it. Everything truly is better with bacon. Pro has one of the best STFU stares. Personally, I went home and started practicing mine. Truly inspirational. Ashley Madison could be a real contender for IP 2020. Be on the look out for this up and comer

Heard Andy Stanley communicate over the weekend and piggy-backed off his words and direction. Take-away: If we are wise, we will pause and ask the question, “What have we learned through all this?” What do we want to move forward?” How can we be better for it?” *Pain without any gain is a shame*

Focus on bein gbetter in three areas: (1) How can you be better financially? What could you have been doing? *I want is better than I owe* (2) How can you be better for it relationally? With your spouse? With your kids? *Own your piece of the pie* (3) How can you be better for it personally? Internally, how is your world view? Do you find yourself praying more for the first time in a long time? Has your faith been rattled? Did you discover your faith was more fragile than you imagined? *PAY ATTENTION TO THAT TENSION* It could lead to something good or something better.

Let’s face and embrace the lessons we’ve learned. Let’s not lose perspective. Let’s get better….together

No matter which AO the QIC attends, everyone LOVES burpees. It’s an interesting phenomenon that could be a good case study one day. I imagine it has to do with a positive attitude. You should see the smiles once the word “burpee” is spoken. Purely Amazing!

5/11/20 was significant for me personally. Not only was it F3 Chattanooga’s first day back after a long hiatus but it was also my 1yr anniversary. Talked about how it felt good to be back and am thankful for each one of the men there. The accountability and fellowship they all bring. Encouraged everyone to be intentional in everything they do whether in work, personally or spiritually
