Life can be very difficult at times. Going it alone, in many cases, only makes it more difficult. As a man, we are taught to be independent in tough situation almost to the point of shame when done. However, like pride in other situation, an over abundance of independence will lead to a fall as well. Therefore, we must reach out and admit our struggles and ask for help. While, there is a line between over sharing and opening about struggles, we still must reach out for help. How do we find the line? Simply this: reach out to someone you know, trust, and love who will help you and also tell you when it’s “T.M.I.”

    Conditions

42 degrees. Felt like the mid thirties, and it was significantly different than the air at the Huey yesterday. It was very damp and moist. It was quite the dynamic. Ice spots on the track, but it also just felt like a super humid morning that wasn’t so cold.

    The Thang

YHC instructed Pax to grab a Battle Buddy. Not to be mistaken for a partner, the Battle Buddy is there to push and encourage his counterpart. This seemed to confuse the Pax as they thought it was a Dora especially when the rep count was revealed.
I Have Nothing Creative for this, but the Pax agreed a routine similar will work for a monthly barometer. So, the ” The Monthly Barometer thing at Shot House Where We Lift Blocks and Run A Lot”??
    Run 2 Laps AYG
    100 Shoulder Presses
    Run 2 Laps AYG
    100 Curls
    Run 2 Laps AYG
    100 Bent Over Rows
    Run 2 Laps AYG
    100 Merkins
    Run 2 Laps AYG
    Leg Raises
    Run 2 Laps AYG
    Squats
This “design” led to some modifying/mixing by the Pax. My only request was to do no less than 50 reps at a time and, of course, no less than one lap at a time. Minimum goal was 2 miles and 100 Merkins Completed. Ultimate goal — Complete ALL reps and run 3 miles.

    COT

Endurance is often a hard thing to truly define. Yesterday at the Huey was all about endurance, but so was today. YHC promised the men of the Huey, yesterday; that today’s workout would be very different, and it was, so how then, are they both about endurance. Well, each required a man to push himself to finish something that was difficult.
Today, we got our Battle Buddy for encouragement NOT competition. True endurance calls us to compete, Paul encourages competition in the Bible, but that competition is all about competition within rather than without.
Finding motivation to push oneself in race in which someone else is leading is much easier than finding motivation to suddenly push harder.
Funny thing, life is much more about the latter rather than the former. Life’s obstacles only provide the obstacle to surmount. It doesn’t provide a leader as a benchmark to “catch” before finishing.
You want help with endurance, you must find the inner strength, but life does provide people. People can become Battle Buddies. Battle Buddy connections mean each man encourages the other to push hard and fast past the obstacles rather competing against each other to finish the obstacle first.

She Shed just lapped us! (Had to be there moment)
Cinder Blocks clearly had more concrete in them when they were made “back in the day” or maybe that moss was extra heavy.
So, are we in partners or not? Do we have to do that many together or separate?
I think we are no partners by default…I got dropped — Gretel

      Conditions

Low 30’s, but the Pax there could tell the temperature had been much lower. The entire park had this beautiful glisten that almost resembled snow as the bright lights, which light the flag, gazed upon the frosty grass. It was especially apparent around the “Choppa” as the contrast of the shadow met the glisteny (this is now a word, write it down) frost. Somehow, the air felt comfortably dry and perfect to breathe in the wonderful valley air.

      Farm Work
Pax 1 — Carry two coupons, suitcase carry style, to the curb. Once there, drop the coupons, and mosey back.
      Pax 2 — Complete 20 Squats
Once Pax 1 returns, partners switch, Pax 2 moseys to the curb, retrieves the coupons and carries back to Pax 1.
Rinse and Repeat the above process with a second round of squats, two rounds of leg raises, and two rounds of monkey humpers

      Just a Bunch of Babies
At some point during this routine, a comment was made that inspired both the title this Backblast, as well as, the title of this routine.
Pax partnered up once again. While one Pax completed 10 Straight Leg Deadlifts, the other Pax Bear Crawled as far as possible. Once deadlifts were complete, Pax ran and caught the other for an exchange. This process continued until we made it around the opposite curb and back.
We switched partners and complete the same routine, with a little shorter distance and 15 LBCs. Next, we completed 20 curls keeping with the same routine.
One more switch of the partners, 25 straight leg deadlifts, 20 LBCs, and 15 Curls. We, of course, completed the bear crawl routine between each exercise.

We closed with Geek Squad leading us in Dolly for 12 reps IC and Blue leading us in Hollow Body Hold for 10 count IC.

      COT

Regrets: If each Pax were surveyed and asked about regrets, my conjecture is this: he either (1) bows out his “pride muscles” by puffing out the chest and throwing his shoulders back and boldly claims, “I regret nothing”; (2) swallows his pride a bit and talks about attempting to regret little but admittedly regrets some past actions; or (3) boldly admits regrets exists in his life, but he works everyday to cut down on the actions he takes which cause regret.

No matter the answer, YHC spoke about the opportunities in life in which we have opportunities to control the outcome significantly in order to prevent those regrettable moments.

This morning centered around two simple ideas: The F3 workout and connecting with others. As Geek Squad once stated, “I have certainly regretted not going to a workout, but I have yet to regret going to a workout.” Powerful words. When the only hinderance between going to a workout is cold weather and a warm bed, then take away the opportunity for regret to seep into your life. Get out into the Gloom with your brothers.

YHC moved into the next topic. Oddly enough, it connects with that whole brotherhood idea. We often throw around the word brother in F3. Do we really mean it? If so, who are we reaching out too as often as possible to check on them, connect with them, invite them to something, encourage them, or even, and this will sound gosh awful crazy, tell them you love them. If they’re truly you’re brother, then don’t you love them? What possible regret could come from something like this? So yeah, you may not get the same positivity and love in return, but that’s not why you’re doing it in the first place. It’s not for affirmation. It’s not because they deserve it. It’s not because they’re the cool kid. It’s because you care about them and genuinely want to know they’re well and want to offer support.

        COT

I came across the Backblast from my first ever Q at Hill City.  It was a really cool day as two FNGs were named that gloomy morning, one of whom is now your AOQ.  The other strayed away but is now quite the staple, consistent member of F3 Chattanooga.  On that morning, I paid tribute to Delta.  Delta led the first ever workout I attended in F3 Chattanooga back in 2017  I, once again, paid a little tribute to him this morning.

There have been many, many others that have inspired me, motivated me, loved me, and posted with me.  To those men, I will always be grateful as I am for each of you this morning who chose to attend. Looking across and seeing Ringwald (AOQ), who passed to Skitch, who passed to Sunshine is such a rewarding experience, especially because YHC was blessed with the opportunity to see each named AND Q the very day Sunshine was an FNG.

All that being said, let me set a reminder for all of us that we have a responsibility to do our best to be the type guys I mentioned above. Our sons and daughters, friends, neighbors, family don’t all necessarily deserve a man who acts in this manner, but that’s the exact reason we must do it.  Truly taking on responsibility to care for others requires giving that care in spite of how deserving those receiving care deserve it. It is never about someone deserving our grace and love, it’s about giving no matter what happens in life.

F3 is chalked full of jargon, acronyms, almost to the point of it’s own language. There is actually a lot of good that comes from some of it. The Q Source, written by Dredd, naturally is filled cover to cover with said jargon. In it, he speaks of a man’s G3L which addresses Preparedness. Truly being prepared requires a man to have total alignment with his G3L. We are a month into 2021, still plenty of time to align your G3L which says this: a man must Get Right, Live Right, Lead Right, and Leave Right. That last part is so important. It is the legacy part. As you align the first Three, make sure you are doing so that it leads to a lasting positive legacy.

For Christmas, YHC received a cube with a variety of exercises on it. Today, the Pax would roll, kick, toss etc.. to another Pax. Whatever the magic cube decided, well at least at the beginning, is the exercise the Pax completed. Exercises were completed the “hard way” and any Pax with Q experience led chosen exercise in cadence.

          COT

I assured anyone reading this; that, I am well aware this whole cube routine could appear to be a lazy way to plan a workout, but I assure you thought was put into it. The whole purpose of the cube portion of the workout was put there to lead into the COT.

The Pax, as long as they didn’t cheat, had zero idea what exercise would land on them. They did not know what kind of “bearer of bad news” they would have to be. They especially did not know, in the beginning, they would have to lead certain exercises in cadence.
Why this cube? The cube is random. It comes flying from an unknown direction with unknown consequences. The Pax had to adapt and lead.
Isn’t that a metaphor for life. Things come from all directions. We do not know what may arrive from that unknown direction, nor what will be asked of us.
We are left, then, with bowing up our chest, placing God’s armor upon us, and facing the unknown with courage. Our families, friends, brothers, and Nation needs us more than ever to do this.

            COT

Today’s COT centered around a HIM who, despite my best efforts, still has not tried F3. George Wilson has a brother. His brother seemed to be the favored child and was just sworn in to his 4th term as a county sheriff. His brother has always looked younger. His brother, however, knows very little of the sacrifice, humility, and love that George exhibits. While the brother is a quality man, he has not spent a lifetime of putting others before himself. George began a career in teaching but upon the merger of Rossville High and Chattanooga Valley High to form Ridgeland, his program was eliminated. He had two choices: go to work for his dad at a service station or go back to school to complete a Bachelor’s Degree to continue teaching, he chose the former. He did this to maintain security for his family as his son was just coming off major heart surgery.
The service station was just that: a true service station. It opened in 1958, provided the only Greyhound Stop between Chattanooga and Atlanta, the first provider of U-Haul services in the area, and provided a full service island in which patrons received a clean windshield, gauged tires, checked fluids, and of course a full tank of gas.

Fast forward 30 years later — The service station still stands, proudly, as almost a historic landmark for the town of LaFayette, Georgia. Paw Paw has gone on to glory. The EPA came in and removed the gas tanks — (sounding like an Alan Jackson song yet?). The full service island is gone. The original car lift is now just a reminder of past nostalgia.

Still reading? Good. Now you get to hear the things that have not left. George Wilson, named for his father George Wilson, is still there. The service that began in 1958, yeah that’s still there too. The sacrifice spoken of previously, yeah that’s still there too. You’ll find that in the jar of pickled beets George received as form of payment from an elderly woman who could not pay in cash. The community’s love for the “coldest water in town” in that old water found, yeah that’s still there too. The absolute love for the people, the customers from George, yeah that is still there too; because well, that is one thing “you just never sacrifice, because, in life, all ya got is your name, so you better treat people right”. A day in, day out struggle in the heat and cold to provide for others, yeah that’s still there. The wonder if business will be enough to cover everything, yeah that’s still there. Oh, the best mechanic in there area, Jonah, yeah he’s still there too.

Wait a minute: George runs that shop, right? Absolutely he runs that shop, and he’s still running it; because, he knows the importance of swallowing pride and surrounding himself with the best people possible. Now that community down there knows they can still get the best care, love, and selflessness that comes from George at the same place they can find the best mechanic.

George is getting tired. He wants to spend time with grandchildren. He wants to let it all go, but knows so much “service” will be lost. Sacrifice.
So, YHC closes with this (thanks for sticking through this far): George Washington Wilson (Paw Paw) passed his name (George Dale Wilson) and service/selflessness to his son. His son that most know has Dale Wilson. I just know him as Dad.

              COT

Anvil generally sees much smaller numbers than today’s count. Consistently, however, those numbers almost always include Threeskin and Fissure.
On the New Year’s Day Converegence, Threeskin gave a great COT that led me to start looking for inspiration in my life as well as for my next COT. Many things crossed my mind, but I kept coming back to the two guys that seem to always be at Anvil. I wanted to give this riveting COT to inspire guys, but I settled on the COT that was planned for me, Threeskin, and Fissure. A more personal COT. A COT geared direct “at” those two guys especially Fizz.
It went a little something like this: Fissue and I have had a crazy history in the few years we have known each other. Daily talks that come with a close friendship all the way to a very significant falling out. Either way, he and I have gone through some F3 and life “crap” together. Well, in preparation for the COT, I thought about those consistent Anvillians. I realized that, whether I liked it or not and, for the longest, despite my reaction, they provided unbridled feedback with utmost of intent of trying to make me better.
It takes someone special to keep coming back and helping someone that seems to indicate zero desire for said help, but Threeskin and Fissure did for the longest time especially Fissure. He deserved to know I still recognize this. He deserved to have it said, out loud, to other Pax whether they already knew it or not.
YHC did add this: as the new year begins you often here of people developing their “one word”. Often times, the ones that get all the love are those expected and common words: “commit”, “work”, “effort”, perservere”, but what about a less common one, I don’t know, say….”not”.
That’s right, “not”…as YHC goes into the new year, that’s the “one word”. Not going to stop loving. Not going to stop giving grace. Not going to be impatient. Not going to close off to feedback. Not going to stop trying to develop more self awareness. Not going to strive to be better. Not going to quit on those who depend on me.
“What about ya’ll? Do you have one word that strives to do the same things?”

YHC truly wishes he has the memory to adequately recount the MC from this Q.
Sidekick likes to Google while reading the paper in his rocking chair yelling at people on his lawn.
Nobody can ever make a more confusing, yet passionate Slack announcement than our friend Duck
John Doe’s attire — that is all
YHC only missed a hundred or so great lines from MC this morn

              COT

3rd Q of the week. 3rd AO with a different group of guys. YHC spoke once again about St. Thomas Aquinas. He was both a devout Christian and Humanist. He proposed the main ideas of Humanism, yet he still remained a devout Christian. In other words, he still put God first.

Now, the Humanism is often partnered with Atheism. Oh how St. Thomas would’ve been upset with this. He was clearly a convicted man.

That is what today’s COT is really about. While there was a great deal of talk about dairy. The focus is today is really about one’s courage of convictions.

If you are convicted, ethical, and moral, then don’t let the circumstances change this.

                COT

Saint Thomas Aquinas, a devout Christian, proposed the idea of Humanism. Humanism simply puts more emphasis on the human mind and its ability to rationalize and use that. At the time, he got in a great deal of trouble for this as it did not align with the church’s “laws”. He still remained committed to his faith.

Do a Google search today and his original philosophy seems to go hand in hand with atheism. Why is that?

Somewhere, at some point, someone los their way, bastardized the original philosophy, and claimed it as their own.

This COT was about Christianity, atheism, Humanism, or even faith. It was about pointing out the effects of people losing their way. Let’s makes sure we don’t lose our way and always keep the courage of our convictions.

                  COT

Standard 7.42 of the Tennessee State Standards cover Thomas Aquinas and Humanism. As I was developing some curriculum materials along with F3 — Petrino yesterday, we discussed how much the idea of Humanism had changed compared to the original writings of the guy that proposed it.
There is a school in Florida that “rolls” out the atheletes from year to year. The school is Saint Thomas Aquinas, yes, SAINT Thomas Aquinas.
Thomas Aquinas was a theologian AND philosopher. He deveoted his life to educating people both in (pastoral) and rational (intellectual). He believed strongly in his Christian faith. His teachings have stood the test of time; because, he proposed ways in which faith and rationale live in harmony.
At times, faith becomes so mystified, some are either turned away from or cannot understand it. Philosophy, at times, opens the door for such self-serving purposes that it also turns people away or causes us to make poor decisions.
Aquinas taught that these worked together in that our faith helps us learn, fill in the gaps of which rationale simply can’t, and prevent future mistakes often resulting from a pure dependence on rationale. On the other hand, he taught that philosophy can help us understand the world around us better, and it helps to demystify faith in such a way that the human brain can actually understand.
Should you search Humanism on Google today, chances are you would not find the type of Humanism in which Aquinas devoted so much of his life’s work toward. A search now seems to yield articles connecting atheism and Humanism as one in the same, or to be a Humanist one must be an atheist. Why? The guy that proposed this would have completely disagreed!
What can we learn from these articles that seem to be in abundance on Google and Aquinas’ teachings? The human element in which Aquinas did not account for: selfishness had most successfully bastardized the original intent and philosophy of Humanism.
The challenge is this: please do not be those that turn to the self-serving purposes of the world and take an ideal, moral, or ethic and change it for the worse. Change is great, but change does not mean sacrificing ones morals, convictions, and beliefs.
