Teamwork (something something) Dream Work

QIC:  Escobar

Date: 06/29/2020

PAX: Chavez, Swingset, Lockjaw, Best in Show, Mayhem, Ramrod, Fastlane, D-fib, Slim Shady, WreckedEm, Purple Rain

AO: Beast Ridge

Conditions

Foggy and Dark. “Humid” should auto-populate in this section when you start typing. No rain, but it was wet.

COP

Short Mosey to the parking lot on near the playground. SSH x 30, Forward Fold x 15, WMH x 16, LBAC x 10, Reverse x 10, Seal Claps x 10, Teapots x 10 each side.

The Thang

Moseyed to soccer field so we could take care of Best in Shows freshly cleaned shoes (Grass is softer than concrete). Formed 4 groups of 3 men each. Within each group, 1 man would perform exercise A while the other 2 men would perform exercise B. Each group would complete the number of reps for exercise A as a team, switching between members at their own discretion. After finishing the total reps in each round, the team ran across the field and back. Hold Plank or Al Gore waiting on the other groups to finish.

Round 1: Exercise A 100 Burpees. Exercise B Reverse Lunges

Round 2: Exercise A 150 Merkins. Exercise B Al Gore

Round 3: Exercise A 200 Squats. Exercise B Plank (high or low)

Round 4: Exercise A 250 Monkey Humpers. Exercise B Reverse Crunch

Round 5: Exercise A 300 Flutter Kicks (only counting Left OR Right leg). Exercise B Plank Jacks

Last minute of the workout: AMRAP LBC (Best in Show request)

COT

Teamwork. We are all part of a team, and in most cases we are members of multiple teams throughout our day. Whether it be your workout group, co-workers, church members, or spouse, we all find ourselves belonging to a team. In most cases, teams are able to accomplish more as a whole than the individual members can alone. Each member has a role within the team, and the team’s success depends on each member working together.

What are your teams? What roles are you playing within your teams? Are your teams failing or succeeding?

Moleskin

Multiple men asked if we would be getting in the grass. Never bring fancy shoes. And if you do, remember you can wash them, again.

Also, when running to the visitor side of the soccer field, don’t be deceived by the red base of the bleachers. It is not a wall, but rather a mesh screen. Don’t try to push against it as if it were a wall.

Talked about some history around how the Parliament AO came about from growth to the name. Transitioned to “Judging” and how we/I tend to do this often in my day to day. Read one of my favorite quotes from the book The Shack. See below. Encouraged PAX to look not to judge and themselves above others, but to look to understand and see others as equals.

“Then it is you who determines good and evil. You become the judge. And to make things more confusing, that which you determine to be good will change over time and circumstance. And then beyond that and even worse, there are billions of you each determining what is good and what is evil. So when your good and evil clashes with your neighbors, fights and arguments ensue and even wars break out….And if there is no reality of good that is absolute, then you have lost any basis for judging…Judging requires you to think yourself superior over the one you judge.”

Had some great Parliament & the Funkadelics tunes rolling to kick us off, and then transitioned to some 60s rock. I really wanted The Count to feel young again, as our elder PAX member. I mean he was already disoriented from not following parking directions on slack. The first FNG at P-Funk was named Modify….coincidence? I think not.

Each man grabbed two blocks (for themselves), and we walked down the hill of gratitude. Cones were lined up along the road.

      Stopped at each cone:
      20 Shrugs

Once we arrived at the bottom it was time for the first part of the “Thang”.

      The Thang

Parter up in 3’s and AMRAP with accountable planking partners
      For one minute:
1 Pax performs Merkins as many times as possible in a minute; Accountability partner counts reps and planks for said minute. FLAPJACK

1 Pax performs BBSU as many times as possible in a minute; Accountability partner counts reps and planks for said minute. FLAPJACK

Derived from the GoRuck Jerome Gonzalez WOD, named after a Ruck Participant whom tragically died during the Joe Warner Bragg Heavy on February 17, 2018.

      The Setup:
      1) Partners split up, 1 group runs to bottom of the hill of gratitude, blocks remain at the first stop/cone; Other group walks to top of hill with blocks – this signifies the “end point”
      2) Group at bottom of hill runs to first cone performs 10 burpees. Grab blocks, farmer carry to 2nd cone for 10 burpees, farmer carry blocks to third cone for 10 more burpees
      4) Meanwhile, group at top of hill performs endless rounds of 10 Flutter Kicks, 10 Mercurial Freddie’s, 10 Little Baby Crunch’s
      5) When burpee/hill group arrives at top, switch

2 Rounds was all the time we had for today

      1-Ten count

Pax circle up; Should press/Overhead coupon holds and ascending reps around the circle. Stop at 5 reps

Still in circle, Pax do 5 shrugs going around the circle, with 5 second hold at the top on final rep. 2 rounds.

      COT

Randomly and anecdotally, I asked each of the pax their thoughts on the hill. Asking specifically, “do you like this hill?”, “Do you hate this hill?”, “What do you hate about it?”. Most agreed, the hill was no fun/difficult/sucked. To my surprise, one pax said, “I love it”… This guy gets it. Aye – Bumblebee! Typical Rucker attitude, ’embracing the suck’

So I’ve learned, the things that we sometimes hate the most are the ones that give us the greatest challenge and reward. We likely see the negative before the positive.

A few weeks back YHC was thrust into a new role at work. A surprise to me and I was not given much time to process it. Over the ensuing days, I wrestled with the new change. It would be more responsibility, longer hours, more time away from family, out of my comfort zone, etc.  Why these feelings of negativity, though? It was a great opportunity, right?

I pondered and thought more on it. The reason it was not favorable (at the outset) to me was because it scared me, it was difficult, how would I succeed, what does success even look like? So many questions. But, alas, the root of the question and the issue was found.

We see obstacles sometimes in fear. We see a hill and worry about the climb, fears creep in like – “can I run this thing?”….  “will it hurt?…” and then convincingly you tell yourself, “it will hurt”. “Will I slow the group down?”. No one wants that kind of negative accountability.

The thought process is very consuming. But, flip the perspective, and the challenge becomes a gracious opportunity.

The hill, even as a challenge, will make you better. Yes, it will make you hurt, but it will make you stronger. That new job/role at work, will stretch your limits and give you a chance to improve/accelerate in your career; offer you a chance to practice your leadership of others and give someone else a chance to be challenged and an opportunity at success. See the difference in the mentality? The perspective.

A reward lies on the other side of every obstacle. Embrace the challenge.  How have you been challenged today, this week, this month? Think better of it. See the positive.

      • We’ve been over this, I’m an idiot. I entered the burpee total wrong (280) this morning and Gusher picks up my six – texts me and asks if I thought that was the right number of burpees (he knew it wasn’t; what a kind and graceful line of questioning). As I opined on his suggestion, I realize, yep, I was 210 burpees off. He then gives me this wonderful explanation of how we arrive at our number from this morning (this was not planned on my behalf).
        • So, each guy did 70 burpees. 7 PAX were there…. 70 x 7 = 490 burpees
        • He tells me that biblically:
          • ’70 x 7 has significance. The Lord said, that’s the number of times we ought to give one another.  Not limited to 490, however. We have a literary device to instruct us to forgive innumerably.’
          • ‘7 Pax. Seven is the number of perfection’
      • Gusher = High Impact; thank you brother
      • It’s fun to hear Recycle regale us of his tales in the Marines Army.  Ranger school and all…
      • 2 Blocks > 1 Block
      • The workout we did today was a memorial WOD – turns out Bumblebee was at the event! His account of the experience was incredible. Grateful to have heard that.
      • I asked the pax, “which is the densest muscle in your body?; hint: it’s a lower body extremity”.. their answer was equally not surprising and amusing.

Snow Patrol and I ran 1/2 mile before the workout. Chavez ran around the building 1 time during the 1 minute warning.

        The Thang

Used the field next to the parking lot. Spaced out 15 total cones in two lanes to perform exercises at each.

        Uhhhh…….. next, we did burpees.

Started at the beginning of every minute. Completed 8 burpees and rested the remainder of the minute while moving to the next station. Rinse and repeat.

I think we got to 200 and then decreased to 7 burpees a minute. Did this for some time and switched back to 8 burpees a minute for the last several rounds. We were going to end with 308 until Snow Patrol Decided to do another 12 in the last minute.

Finished with 320 burpees each. Vaccine’s calculator (big brains) quickly told us the total was 1600 for the group of 5 men.

This was not the workout I had originally planned. But when it is 5:00 PM the day before your Q and you are the only HC, a modification may be necessary. I’ll get back to the original workout another time.

After deciding to change the workout, Snow Patrol and Chavez texted me saying they were coming. I wasn’t going to change the workout again, so I warned both of them the workout would be full of misery and they would hate me. They both responded by telling me I wasn’t a good salesman. My response, “I sell drugs, people come to me.”

Vaccine and Picabo pulled up right at the start time. I used the 1 minute warm-up to explain to them there would not be a warm up and the plan for the workout. They didn’t look very happy. I almost thought Vaccine was going to leave (completely understandable).

Picabo wrung out his shorts and shirt in the parking lot after the workout; quite the puddle.

When I arrived in the parking lot for the workout, I opened my truck and retrieved a gas can. You should have seen Snow Patrol’s eyes (thinking it was a part of the workout)

Cape Fear did 304 burpees per PAX member; we did 320, so yeah.

John Doe is pretty proud of his burpee records. Well I hold the burpee record for most burpees per PAX member in a single workout. I wouldn’t recommend going to one of his upcoming Qs.

You may be asking yourself why I only had 15 cones since cones are usually sold in packs of 8. Burrito refuses to return my 16th cone.

Orange cones marked off 100ish yards on both the straightaways on the track
Yellow cones were also setup on the first straightaway every 25 yards for 125 yards

Beginning at the first straightaway we performed burpee broad jumps for 100 yards, mosey’d the first curve, bear crawled the next straightaway 100 yards and mosey’d the next curve until we reached the first yellow cone to begin suicides on the rest of the yellow cones.
After suicides we started it all over again at the first orange cone for more burpee broad jumps. On and on until time is called.

With 5 minutes remaining we once again did the slaughter starter (finisher?). Only got to the 6 burpees before calling time.

2 pax completed 3 rounds of the fun. Kudos to Mr. Met for sprinting the last bit of the suicides to finish his 3rd round.

          Good times.

The TRUTH is exactly what the verse says…except what is common to mankind. We all have doubts at times, we all worry about the future (especially now), financial concerns…the list goes on & on. We carried our blocks whilst moseying up to the stadium stopping every 25 yards or so to stretch (michael phelps, iraqi tea time, slerkins, imperial walkers, fwd fold)

              The Thang

Twas fate to only have 4 pax today because the home side of the stadium only has four lanes of steps/stairs. They also happen to be quite long for more suckage to come.
We left our blocks at the top of each set of stairs and began the fun at the bottom after turning on some nice yacht rock.
              Here’s how it went:
10 regular ol’ merkins, run up the stairs, 10 bent over rows with block, run down the stairs
10 wide merkins aka werkins, run up the stairs, 10 curls, run down
10 incline merkins, run up, 10 front raises, run down
10 decline merkins, run up, 10 overhead presses, run down
rinse and repeat until the Q finished 5 rounds. The skinnest of all 3’s and the Pro’s of all skweeto’s got in a little more than 5 rounds. John Doe may have done 5 or more but I dunno. Sorry, JD.

Next we moved to the bleacher platform at the base of the seats. It was cold and kinda wet and made for a good place to get in some Mary (six inches, flutter kicks, pretzel crunches, crunchy frogs) and a merkin finisher (5 rounds of 10)

              COT

F3 workouts are led by men who participate in the workout in a rotating fashion, with no training or cert necessary. We take that principle and apply it to leadership positions within F3. Recently we’ve seen a new nantan, first f q, comz and new site q’s. The guys in attendance know all about that but we chatted for a few about making sure you’re priming the next guy to step up.

Wuzntme graciously allowed me to lead a workout at Hacksaw while he administered his own whippin’ at Lions Den today.

Brought the Landfill flag and planted it by the “hill” so we could maximize the 11’s

I had something originally planned about being hesitant to lead the first time, but that all went out the window with the Coronavirus consuming just about all of our lives. I shared that these are unfamiliar times. Closest thing I can relate to as a country is 9-11. People aren’t sure what the next months are going to look like. Scheduled events and gathering are closing left and right. We are almost assuredly headed for a recession. I think it’s important for us to lean on each other during this time
